Kharmen Wingard joined Head Coach Dayna Smith's staff as an assistant coach prior to the 2011-12 season. Wingard came to East Hill after four seasons as the assistant men’s basketball coach at nearby Cortland.
Last season, the Big Red posted its best overall record since its Ivy League championship campaign, going 14-14 overall and finishing fifth in the Ivy League at 6-8. Cornell was highly competitive in conference play, with half of its losses coming by eight or fewer points. Wingard helped forwards Allyson DiMagno '14 and Nia Marshall ’17 to become one of the most dominant tandems in the Ivy League. DiMagno set the Cornell record for career rebounds and established herself as one of the greatest players in Ivy League history, becoming just the 10th player ever, and first at Cornell, to accumulate 1,300 points and 900 rebounds. Following the season, she was named second-team All-Ivy. Marshall was named the Ivy League Rookie of the Week five times during the course of the season and became the first Cornell freshman women’s basketball player to ever earn a Player of the Week honor.

In 2012-13, Wingard helped the team to a 13-15 record overall and a mark of 5-9 in the Ivy League to finish fifth overall in the conference standings. His guidance helped transform  DiMagno from a guard into a second-team All-Ivy forward who went on to set Cornell's single-season record for rebounds (321).
In his first season with the Big Red, Wingard helped Cornell to double its win total both overall (from six to 12) and in Ivy League play (from three to six) from the 2010-11 campaign. His work with the forwards helped Clare Fitzpatrick earn honorable mention All-Ivy accolades.
While with the Red Dragons, Wingard helped the men’s basketball program to a 59-50 record overall and a mark of 38-30 in the SUNYAC. During his time, Cortland advanced to two consecutive SUNYAC semifinal games, as well as a trip to the ECAC finals in 2007-08. Wingard worked directly with the post players and helped a pair of Red Dragons earn second-team All-SUNYAC honors. In addition to his responsibilities on the bench, Wingard worked in the Cortland Office of Admissions.
Prior to Cortland, Wingard was an assistant coach at Daemen College and a graduate assistant coach at Buffalo State.
He played collegiately at Gannon University and Daemen College. While at Daemen, he earned first-team All-American Mideast Conference (AMC) honors as a sophomore and second team All-AMC honors as a junior and senior. He graduated seventh in career scoring and second in career 3-point field goals and helped lead the Wildcats to an appearance in the NAIA Division II elite eight game during his sophomore season.

In February of 2014, Wingard was inducted into the Daemen College Athletics Hall of Fame along with his teammates from the 2003-04 Wildcats' men's basketball team that advanced to the national quarterfinal round of the NAIA Division II National Championship.
Wingard, who earned a bachelor’s degree in social work at Daemen and a master’s degree in student personnel administration from Buffalo State, attended Bennett High School in Buffalo, N.Y., where he was a member of the basketball and cross country teams.
