David Metzendorf

Dave Metzendorf

Dave Metzendorf enters his third year on the Cornell basketball staff and his second season as an assistant coach. He previously spent last year as a special assistant to the head coach.

Metzendorf's first season on the sidelines in a coaching capacity coincided with one of the nation's top turnarounds, as the Big Red improved a school-record 11 games over the 2013-14 campaign. Cornell ranked among the top defensive teams in the nation, leading the Ivy League and ranking 18th in Division I in defensive field goal percentage and pacing the circuit in blocked shots. He assisted in the development of All-Ivy forward Shonn Miller and guards Galal Cancer and Devin Cherry, both of whom graduated in the top 20 all-time at Cornell in assists.

Metzendorf had responsibility for many of the behind-the-scenes tasks in the program in 2013-14, from acting as film coordinator to handling all aspects of team travel. He briefly served as assistant coach at Williams College under former Cornell captain Kevin App '07 before returning to East Hill. Metzendorf will be responsible for game and practice planning, recruiting and working with the backcourt.

Metzendorf served as a student manager for the Big Red for one season and as a student assistant for two more. He was instrumental in assisting with gameday setup, statistics and player workouts. He is a 2013 graduate of Ithaca College with a degree in sport management and earned the department’s Professional Excellence Award and the Dean's Award.
