ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell men's soccer team was recognized by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America with the Team Academic Award for compiling a cumulative grade point average of better than 3.00 for the 2008-09 school year, the organization announced on Friday.
The Big Red men are one of just 143 teams around the country from all three NCAA divisions to earn the award, posting a 3.27 grade point average during the last academic year. Six of the eight Ivy League institutions were included on the list, with Brown, Columbia, Dartmouth, Penn and Princeton joining Cornell in earning the honor.
Cornell finished the season with a 6-6-5 overall record under first-year head coach
Jaro Zawislan, a year after going 1-15 to set a record for the most losses in a season. The Big Red also placed a pair of freshmen (Bennett Kenyon and
Rick Pflasterer) on the All-Ivy League honorable mention list and finished the year with a 1-3-3 league mark to finish in a tie for sixth place.
