ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell men's track and field team opened up the indoor season with outstanding performances at the 17-team Cornell Relays in Barton Hall on Friday and Saturday. The Big Red had five event wins to along with a remarkable 13 IC4A qualifiers, a school record and six changes to the all-time top 10 lists.
Beginning Friday night, sophomore Nick Huber showed great range in the heptathlon, setting a new school record of 5,090 points, with a 60 dash of 7.20, a 20-9 long jump, a 38-7 3/4 shot put, a clearance of 6-7 in the high jump, 8.58 in the 60 hurdles, a 14-1 1/4 clearance in the vault and 2:59.38 in the 1000. Junior Alex Holcombe also qualified for the IC4As with a runner-up total of 4807 while junior Chris Ryan reached #7 all-time at Cornell with a score of 4741.
Leading the way on Saturday was senior co-captain Duane Teixeira who took second in the long jump with an outstanding jump of 24-8 1/4 (#6 all-time) to place second to Muhammad Halim '08 (24-11 3/4). Teixeira came back to win the triple jump with a 50-0 3/4 performance, #8 all-time at Cornell. Classmate Gary Jones took second in another IC4A qualifier, reaching 49-7. On the track, sophomore Danny Hagberg moved up to #3 all-time in the 60 hurdles, winning the event in an IC4A qualifying 8.19. Classmate Ken McClain also placed first, running 65.25 in the 500, with another sophomore, Brian Freitas, placing third in 66.00.
An all-freshmen 4X800 showed promise, winning the event in 7:56.02 behind legs from Elliott Rosenberg , Will McFall, Andy Arnold and a strong, come from behind anchor from Nick Wade. Cornell also placed second in the event, with Freitas, freshman David McCuiston, junior Tommy Roy and sophomore Chris Jakobson teaming up to run 7:57.08.
The Big Red had several other notable IC4A-qualifying efforts in the throws: sophomore Bob Belden was second (and the top collegian) in the shot put at 52-6 3/4 and was fifth in the weight at 56-0 while senior Damian Silverstrim was third in 57-5 1/2. In the pole vault, senior Rick Zamora and freshman Peter Roach both cleared 15-9 in placing sixth and seventh, respectively, as each cleared the IC4A standard. Junior Enbani Moore was second in the high jump at 6-6 1/4 while senior Jay Pierce was third at the same height.

Final exams begin next week and the Big Red track teams will return to action early in the New Year with the Cornell Southern Tier Collegiate Open in Barton Hall on Friday, January 8th.
