PRINCETON, N.J. – Three members of the Cornell University women's basketball team have earned All-Ivy honors, highlighted by
Lauren Benson's second-team selection, as was announced by the league office this afternoon. Joining Benson are honorable mention selection
Shannan Scarselletta and All-Rookie team pick
Allison Abt. The voting was done by the league's eight head coaches.
Benson has earned two-straight All-Ivy honors after an honorable mention nod last season. An instrumental part of the team since stepping on campus, the junior point guard led the team and ranked second in the Ivy League in assists per game (5.2). She also finished the year ranked third on the team in points per game (10.1) and rebounds per game (3.9). Her 134 assists on the season rank third all-time in Cornell's single-season assist records and she will enter her final season ranking sixth in Big Red history for assists in a career (299).
Scarselletta earns the first All-Ivy honor of her career with an honorable mention selection after leading the Big Red in points (11.4) and rebounds (5.3) this season. The senior forward also led the team and ranked ninth in the conference in blocks per game (0.7). Her 18 blocked shots on the season gave her 56 blocks for her career, good for eighth place in Cornell history. She led the Big Red in scoring eight times during the season and pulled down a team-high in rebounds in 10 contests.
Despite missing the final four games of the season due to an injury, Abt was impressive enough in her freshman year to earn her first All-Ivy honor. She finished the year with 6.1 points and 2.6 rebounds per game, but saw both those numbers increase significantly during conference action, scoring 8.6 points and pulling down 3.4 rebounds per game against Ancient Eight opponents. She led the team in scoring twice and was named the Ivy League Rookie of the Week on Feb. 22 after leading the Big Red to a pair of victories against Yale and Brown.
The Big Red closed the 2008-09 season with a fourth-place finish in the Ivy League after finishing the year with a 10-16 record overall and a mark of 6-8 in the conference.
