Box Score

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Sophomore Taylor Wood pitched seven strong innings and got timely hitting and run support as the Cornell baseball team scored a 3-1 victory over Binghamton on Wednesday afternoon at Hoy Field. Cornell improves to 5-16 on the season, while Binghamton falls to 9-11 on the year.

Wood scattered four hits in the seven innings of work to even his record at 1-1 on the year. He allowed just one run and walked two Bearcats while striking out five. Mike Carroll came on and worked the seventh, allowing just one hit, while David Rochefort worked a perfect ninth for his third save of the season.

Offensively for the Big Red, Scott Hardinger and Nathan Ford led the way, both going 2-for-4 on the day, with Ford driving in a pair and Hardinger scoring once. Jadd Schmeltzer also slammed his fourth home run of the season in the second inning, a solo shot over the wall in left.

Binghamton got on the board first in the second when Corey Taylor singled and moved to third on a wild pitch, scoring on a single up the middle by Jeff Skelhorne-Gross. Cornell responded with Schmeltzer's blast to knot the score at one before taking the lead in the sixth. With two outs in the sixth, Hardinger singled up the middle and stole second, scoring on Ford's single up the middle.

The Big Red added an insurance run in the eighth as Adam Jacobs led off with a bloop single to left. Jacobs then stole second and came around to score on Ford's double to the warning track in right-center. The 3-1 lead was more than enough for the Big Red as Rochefort got a pair of strikeouts in the ninth to close the contest.

Cornell returns to action on Saturday, opening up a two-day, four-game homestand against Penn at Hoy Field. First pitch of both days' action is slated for noon.
