ITHACA, N.Y. -- Junior defender Tissy O'Connor was a unanimous first-team All-Ivy League selection, while three of her teammates earned spots on the second team when the 2009 honors were announced on Wednesday afternoon by the conference office. Sophomore attacker
Libby Johnson and senior co-captains
Deirdre Lafferty (defense) and
Jessica Wiegand (midfield) also captured second-team honors in a vote by the league's eight head coaches.
O'Connor was a first-team pick on the ballot by all seven of Cornell's opposing head coaches after leading the team in draw controls (43) and ranking second in ground balls (30) and caused turnovers (19). The 43 draws was good for third in the Ivy League and ranks second all-time in a season at Cornell. Overall, she had nine games on the year with at least three draw wins, including a career-high six to go along with two caused turnovers against Brown. O'Connor also on five draws in a victory at Hofstra, won four ground balls and caused three turnovers at New Hampshire and posted three ground balls, three draws and three caused turnovers vs. Vanderbilt. A tenacious defender, she started all 16 of the team's games and scored four goals. O'Connor was an honorable mention pick as a sophomore in 2008.
The three second-team selections are all making their first appearance on an All-Ivy team.
Johnson finished 2009 as the team's leader in points (38) and goals (29). She added 19 ground balls and 12 draw controls to the cause, scoring on 45 percent of her shots overall and 60 percent of her free-position attempts (9-of-15). Johnson had seven games with at least three points, including a six-point effort vs. Hofstra (two goals, four assists) and five goals, including the game-winner, vs. No. 10 Vanderbilt. Johnson was also the team's leader in scoring in Ivy play with 12 goals and 13 points.
Lafferty was also picked for the second team after an outstanding senior campaign. A team co-captain in 2009, she earned Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week honors on March 2. Lafferty posted a team-high 26 caused turnovers and added 23 ground balls and 10 draw controls. She added a bonus two goals and an assist while starting all 16 games. Lafferty was credited with at least two caused turnovers in seven games, including three to go along with four ground balls in the 11-4 win over No. 10 Vanderbilt. Lafferty scored her goals against NCAA tournament teams Syracuse and Princeton, and had a career-high five caused turnovers in the triple overtime win over Rutgers.
Joining Lafferty on the second team was, Wiegand, her fellow co-captain. The senior set career highs in goals (20), assists (seven), points (27), ground balls (22), caused turnovers (16), draw controls (13) and free-position goals (nine) while starting all 15 games in which she played. Wiegand opened the season with a three-goal, two-assist, three-caused turnover performance against Colgate and closed it with a pair of scores against No. 6 Notre Dame. In between, she had a hat trick in the win over LeMoyne, including the game-winner, and also scored the go-ahead goal in the 7-6 triumph over Yale. She will graduate as a three-year starter and four-year letter winner.
