ITHACA, N.Y. -- The quest for its first Ivy League title in 19 years began today when 100 Cornell student-athletes arrived on campus for day one of fall football camp on Monday afternoon. The Big Red will hit historic Schoellkopf Field for its first official practice on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.

The Big Red players hit campus for the first time today on Monday, picking up their camp notebooks from their position coach before a kick-off barbecue. Physicals and an NCAA compliance meeting were also on the docket in preparation for day one of practice, which commences on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.

The first team activity came at 3 p.m., as the Big Red offense and defense joined forces with the Cayuga Addiction Recovery Services for the third annual Cornell football-CARS softball game on Hoy Field. For the third straight year, the defense came home with a victory, capturing the tight contest 12-9.

Cornell football joined forces with CARS in 2007 and has helped raise money and awareness of the program with its "First Downs for Second Chances" program. For every first down the Big Red football team earns, Elmira Savings Bank, First Niagara Insurance and other individual donors pledge money. That has been quite lucrative for CARS, as the Big Red set a school record for first downs in 2007 to raise more than $7,000, then nearly matched that total a season ago in leading the Ivy League in moving the chains.

Tuesday's first practice session will end a full day for the Big Red that includes team lifts and conditioning tests, position and unit meetings, followed by a walk through, a team meeting, taping and treatment and culminates in the nearly two hour practice. With another long preseason camp, the Big Red will nt have a double session practice before opening the season on Saturday, Sept. 19 at 12:30 p.m. at Schoellkopf Field.
