ITHACA, N.Y. -- Freshman
Maneesha Chitanvis has been selected as the Ivy League Rookie of the Week following her play in the Big Red's three games last week, the league office announced on Monday. Chitanvis becomes the first Cornellian to win the league's honor since current sophomore
Kelly Murphy claimed the award on Oct. 27, 2008.
Chitanvis broke into the scoring column on Wednesday when the Big Red scored a 2-0 victory over Colgate. The Los Alamos, N.M., native scored in the second half for her first career goal as the Big Red got its first win of the season. Then, on a short turnaround, the Big Red headed to northern Virginia for a pair of games, taking on William & Mary and George Mason at George Mason's tournament.
Against the Tribe, which was receiving votes in the most recent national college soccer poll, Chitanvis earned the start and played nearly 70 minutes. Two days later against George Mason, Chitanvis played in just over 70 minutes, recording a team-best five shots. For her play against the two opponents, Chitanvis was named to the all-tournament team along with sophomore defender
Sidra Bonner.
The Cornell women's soccer team opens up Ivy League action on Friday night, playing host to Columbia in a 7 p.m. match at Berman Field.
