NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- The Cornell men's swimming and diving team opened its 2010 competition with a strong 169-131 victory on Sunday afternoon at Yale, winning nine events to improve to 4-2 on the season.
Dean Holcomb led a 1-2 finish in the 200 free with a 1:41.59, while
Chris Keady was second in 1:42.88.
Jake Sangren was first in the 100 back in 50.87, while
Michael Cai raced out to a big lead and cruised to a win in the 100 breast in 56.00, more than three seconds faster than teammate
Jake Fisher.
James Keady led a 1-2-3 sweep of the 50 free in 21.44, while Steve Kwartler (21.71) and Sasha Dobolioubov was third in 21.89.
Chris Keady and Sangren were 1-2 in the 200 back, while Cai took home his second individual win with a 2:05.48 in the 200 breast. Holcomb touched first in the 500 free (4:39.50) by narrowly holding off Yale's Matt Lee by 0.12 seconds.
Cai finished a perfect 3-for-3 with a 1:50.73 in the 200 IM, nearly five seconds better than
Chris Keady, who finished second. The 400 relay team capped off the afternoon with a 3:08.32 on the strength of swims by Kwartler, Holcomb,
Kevin Brazitis and Dobrolioubov.
Cornell returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 16 at 1 p.m. when it swims Colgate in Hamilton, N.Y.
