Men's Swimming Tops Colgate, Women Drop Narrow Dual Meet Decision

HAMILTON, N.Y. -- The cornell swimming and diving teams split a dual meet against Colgate on Saturday afternoon, with the men capturing a 193-100 victory and the women falling in a tight 156-144 contest. The men won 12 of the 16 contested events, while the women got six individual victories.

For the women, Chiara Spinazzola took first in both the 100 back and 100 IM (58.58), while Ali Guba (50 free), Jessie Holley (100 breast) and Sarah Icke (200 free) each touched the wall first in their races. In diving, Allie Butters took first in the 3-meter competition with a score of 241.65. Spinazzola also placed second in the 100 free (52.97).

Spinazzola outraced Erin McGraw of Colgate by .07 in the 100 IM and .41 in the 100 back, while Guba touched .02 ahead of Colgate's Kim Siembieda in the 50 free and .04 ahead of Lia Kunnapas. Holley races just .22 ahead of the Radiers' Emma Santoro in some of the closest finishes of the day.

The men had a bit of an easier time against the Raiders, getting off on the right foot when the 400 medley relay team of Jake Sangren, Jake Fisher, Frankie Lacayo and Zac Mijares-Shafari dusted the competition by more than six seconds to collect the win. Michael Cai then went to work in the 400 IM (4:00.91), leading a 1-2-3 Big Red sweep with Dean Holcomb (4:05.05) and Chris Keady (4:09.40) follwoing behind. Cai also won the 500 free in 4:49.85.  Sasha Dobrolioubov won the 200 free in 1:46.75 and Lacayo took the 100 back in 53.20. Steven Kwartler made it a perfect 5-for-5 on the medal stand with a victory in the 100 breast (1:00.76).

Holcomb won his own event in the 100 free (47.07) to lead a 1-2-3 sweep, then took home the 100 IM title (54.22), just ahead of Chris Keady (55.51). Eric Anderson added a win in the 200 back (1:57.38). Also earning an event win was Tyghe Speidel in the 200 breast (2:16.81).

In diving, Jonathan Zollo (255.07) and Robert Lewis (243.07) placed 1-2 in the 1-meter. Lewis then turned it around in the 3-meter, finishing ahead of second-place Zollo by .14 (262.42-262.28).
