Men's Track Claims Upstate Challenge Title

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell track and field teams had impressive performances across the board in their first scored meet of the season, winning the men's and women's team titles at the Cornell Upstate Challenge on Saturday at Barton Hall.  Competing against Buffalo, Colgate, Cortland, Ithaca College and Syracuse, the Big Red combined for 20 events wins and had 12 IC4A qualifiers and 4 ECAC qualifiers.

The men cruised to the team title with a final tally of 285 points, outdistancing Buffalo (103), Ithaca College (65), Colgate (45), Cortland St (27) and Syracuse (25).  The Big Red was led by a pair of strong early-season showings in the heptathlon, including a school record performance from sophomore Nick Huber; he won with 5,191 points.  Classmate Josh Cusick improved to #6 all-time and placed second in an IC4A-qualifying 4,837 points.  Senior co-captin Duane Teixeira leapt 24-5 to win the long jump and placed second with 46-11 1/2 to classmate Gary Jones, who reached 49-2 1/2. in the triple jump as all three horizontal jump marks surpassed the IC4A standard.  Senior Rick Zamora continued his fine season with a 15-9 clearance in the pole vault (yet again bettering the IC4A standard) and sophomore Chris Arlinghaus won the high jump at 6-6 1/4..  There were three IC4A qualifiers in the throws:  sophomore Bob Belden reached 58-3 1/4 in the weight throw, with senior Damian Silverstrim close behind in third at 57-10 1/2 52- 1/2; Belden came back in the shot put for third with a mark of 52-0 1/2.  

On the track, sophomore Ken McClain bettered the IC4A standard in winning the 500 in 1:04.47, while classmate Brian Freitas was second in 1:05.36.  Senior co-captain Mike Kippins won the 800 in an IC4A-qualifying.  Another IC4A qualifer came from freshman Jedidiah Adarquah-Yiadon in the 60; he ran the fourth best time in school history in the finals, with a 6.90 performance.  Junior Cody Boyd won the 400 in 49.79, fellow junior Nate Edelman claimed the mile in 4:22.94, freshman David McCuiston claimed the 1000 in 2:30.50, senior Dale Taylor won the 3000 in 8:33.46 and junior Adrien Dannemiller won the 5000 in 14:59.79.  The 4X400 of McClain (49.7), Freitas (49.6), Boyd (50.3) and freshman Bruno Hortelano-Roig (50.3) won in 3:20.38.
