ITHACA, N.Y. -- For the second time this season, Cornell freshman quarterback
Jeff Mathews has been named the Ivy League Rookie of the Week, sharing it this time with Brown place-kicker Alexander Norocea. Mathews also earned the award on Oct. 4 after the Big Red's win over Bucknell.
Mathews completed 18-of-34 passes for 232 yards and a touchdown against the Bears, directing an offense that didn't turn the ball over. He threw a picture-perfect 21-yard touchdown score to junior tight end
Ryan Houska and had a second touchdown pass called back for a penalty away from the play. He spread the ball around, as four different receivers had catches of at least 20 yards.
Mathews already holds every freshman game and season passing record through his first six varsity games and is the seventh-ranked freshman quarterback in the Football Championship Subdivision. He is completing 53 percent of his passes (90-of-170) and has 974 passing yards and four touchdowns with five interceptions.
The Big Red, with Mathews under center, will play host to Princeton on Saturday, Oct. 30 at 12:30 p.m. at Schoellkopf Field.
