PHILADELPHIA – Cornell sophomore
Rebecca Hirschfeld earned second-team All-Ivy honors this afternoon after finishing the 2010 Ivy League Fencing Championship with an individual record of 13-5 in women's foil. As a team, the Big Red dropped both outings today in the second round of the tournament, falling to Yale and Princeton, to finish in sixth place overall with a 1-5 record. In addition to Hirschfeld, Cornell received a solid outing from freshman
Beverly Yang, who finished her first championships with a 9-9 record in sabre.
After sitting out the first round of play on Sunday, the Big Red opened second round action with a tough 21-7 loss to the Tigers. Both epee and sabre won three points each in the match. Yang led the scoring for Cornell, winning her first two bouts, including a 5-0 over Joana Cichominski. Freshman
Addy McDonnell also had a strong performance in her first full match of the tournament, winning two bouts for Cornell against a talented epee squad of Princeton.
Cornell put up a solid battle against Yale, falling 17-10, but none of the weapons were dominated, with all three winning at least three points for the match. Hirschfield was perfect against the Bulldogs, winning all three of her bouts, while Yang won two bouts at sabre and freshman
Christie Robinson won two at epee.
Select members of the Big Red will travel Providence, R.I. to participate in the NCAA Regional Championships for a chance to qualify for the NCAA Championships.
