DAY 3 NCAA COVERAGE

MACK LEWNES TAKES 2nd PLACE and IS A TWO-TIME ALL AMERICAN!

174 # 1 Mack Lewnes lose by decision # 2 Jay Borschel (Iowa), 2-6

            Both wrestlers started heavy at the head and each took a couple of quick shot initially without catching a leg.  Borschel then went in for a single and was able to takedown Lewnes near the mat's edge.  Lewnes was cautioned back at center.  The Iowa wrestler secured a bar but was unable to turn Lewnes before the two went out of bounds once more.  Lewnes was then cautioned a second time.  Borschel was able to ride out Lewnes for the remainder of the period.

            Lewnes chose bottom to start the second period.  The Cornell wrestler immediately tried to pop up, but Borschel held on and was warned for stalling.  Lewnes then earned his escape.  Lewnes went in for a single that transformed into a scramble between the wrestlers resulting in a stalemate.  With just 20 seconds remaining in the period, Lewnes got a double, but no takedown was awarded before the buzzer.

            Borschel started the third in the bottom position, and Lewnes cut him free.  A single by Borschel resulted in another takedown for the Iowa wrestler. Borschel was again warned for stalling and Lewnes was awarded a point.  With 3:46 of riding time, the Iowa wrestler won the match 2-6.

KYLE DAKE IS A NATIONAL CHAMPION AT 141 POUNDS!

141 # 1 Kyle Dake win by decision # 6 Montell Marion (Iowa), 7-3

            Dake went for a double but Marion defended and the two went out of bounds.  A single by Dake almost resulted in another takedown but once again the two went out of bounds.  A shot by Marion resulted in a scramble and Dake ended up with the takedown before the two once again went out of bounds.  Marion managed an escape at the edge of the mat once more. 

            Dake deferred to start the second period, and Marion chose the bottom position.  The Cornell freshman nearly accumulated back points, but his opponent managed to wriggle to his belly.  Dake, however, was able to bring Marion back to his back for two near fall points.  Accruing 2:34 of riding time in the second period, Dake looked fierce on top.

            The Cornell freshman started in the bottom position for the third period, and earned an instant escape.  Marion got in on a single, but Dake's defense warded off the points again near the mat's edge.  Marion got a single and earned another takedown, but Dake captured a quick escape.  Marion responded with a quick single but Dake held it off to win the championship 7-3.

Parade of All-Americans completed as well as the 125 pound match.  We will update the finals matches for Kyle Dake and Mack Lewnes immediately following their completion.

Coach Rob Koll has achieved eight freshman All-Americans in the last nine NCAA Championships and ranks second behind Minnesota for the 11 tournaments since 1999.

CAM SIMAZ TAKES 3rd PLACE and  IS A TWO-TIME ALL-AMERICAN!

197 # 4 Cam Simaz decision # 3 Hudson Taylor (Maryland), 4-2

            The two wrestlers were fast and heavy right from the start.  Simaz then dove in for a single and nearly took down Taylor before the two went out of bounds.  Simaz looked active and went for a double on his opponent that nearly resulted in a takedown but a stalemate was called.  Just before time ran out on the first, Simaz shot one more time, but no points were scored.

            Taylor started down in the second and escaped early.  Another double by Simaz was denied points near the edge of the mat.  A single attempt by Taylor was well-defended by Simaz to prevent the points. 

            Simaz started neutral in the third.  Simaz went in for a single and this time got the takedown he was looking for throughout the match.  After the two went out of bounds, Taylor jumped up for the escape at the whistle.  A wild scramble between the two resulted in a stalemate that called the action back to center.  Just before the end of regulation, Simaz got in on a double but Taylor defended just as time ran out. With a 2-2 score, the match went into sudden death overtime.

            The Cornell wrestler looked hungry and just moments into the sudden death period, he shot and circled for the takedown over opponent Hudson Taylor with a final score of 4-2.

TROY NICKERSON TAKES 4th PLACE and IS A FOUR-TIME ALL-AMERICAN!
125 # 2 Troy Nickerson lose by decision # 1 Angel Escobedo (Indiana), 0-2

           Escobedo earned a takedown early in the period.  Nickerson ended up using a great deal of injury time.  The Cornell senior almost grasped the escape but was unable to get it period the end of the period.

            Escobedo chose neutral to start the second period.  Both wrestlers hoped from the takedown but neither was able to manage points this period.

            Nickerson chose top for the third period.  Nickerson worked incredibly hard to turn his opponent but was unable to get the near fall he needed to win the match.  Escobedo won with a decision of 2-0.  Congratulations to Troy Nickerson on being a four-time All-American!

197 # 4 Cam Simaz win by decision # 6 Eric Lapotsky (Oklahoma), 9-1

            Simaz went for a single near the edge of the mat and circled for the double to earn his first takedown of the match.  While working to turn his opponent, a potentially dangerous call returned action to center.  Shortly following, the Oklahoma opponent was able to flip out for the escape.  Simaz countered with a double near the edge of the match before the two were declared out.

            Simaz chose down to start the second period.  A near chance for backpoints for the Oklahoma wrestler was halted by a stalemate call and the action returned center.  The Cornell wrestler fought to get out the rest of the period but was unable to do so.

            Lapotsky started the third period neutral, and Simaz was able to get in on a leg before converting to a double for the takedown. The Cornell sophomore then worked to earned two near fall points and with 1:10 of riding time, he earned the win 9-1.

125 # 2 Troy Nickerson wins by fall Cashe Quiroga (Purdue), 4:01

In the first period, a single from Quiroga was countered by Nickerson, who got a single of his own for the takedown.  Nickerson immediately turned his opponent and worked the remainder of the period for the pin, but came away with just three near fall points.

            Nickerson chose down to start the second, and made quick work of putting his opponent to his back.  Despite the Purdue wrestler's powerful arch, Nickerson pinned his opponent to advance to the 3rd/4th place match.

197 # 4 Cam Simaz lose by decision # 1 Jake Varner (Iowa State), 6-0

            The two went out of bounds twice with high action.  Simaz was then warned for stalling, and Varner was able to get in on a double, but because it was out of bounds, no takedown was scored. 

            Varner started down in the second and got a quick escape.  Simaz was warned once more and Varner was awarded a point.  The rest of the period, both wrestlers were ready for a takedown but no other points were scored.

            After a short blood time for Varner, Simaz started neutral for the third.  Varner went for another double, but Simaz defended the takedown and a stalemate was called.  Late in the period, Varner went in on a single and got the takedown, then two points of nearfall.  The final match score was 6-0 Varner.

125 # 2 Troy Nickerson win by decision Anthony Robles (Arizona State), 2-1

      Nickerson's takedown in the first period ended up being the winning points he needed to defeat Robles.

174 # 1 Mack Lewnes decision # 4 Stephen Dwyer (Nebraska), 3-2.

            In the first period each wrestler got a hold of a leg and neither got a takedown initially.  Another shot by Lewnes almost resulted in a takedown, but a strange grip from his opponent encouraged Lewnes to back out.  No points were scored.

            Lewnes started down for the second period and was cautioned, but he earned an early escape.  The Cornell junior got in on a leg, but an out of bounds call prevented him from earning takedown points.

            Dwyer chose down for the third, and, like Lewnes, got a quick escape.  Lewnes then got a takedown, and an injury call by the Nebraska wrestler moved the action back to center.  Dwyer got the escape right after the whistle, but no additional points were scored, and Lewnes won the match with a final score of 3-2.

165 Justin Kerber lose by decision # 7 Ryan Morningstar (Iowa), 2-3

            Morningstar looked for a double early but Kerber countered and a stalemate was called.  The two were both eager for a takedown but neither managed any points in the first period.

            Kerber was in the down position to start the second period.  Twenty seconds before his opponent earned riding time, Kerber was able to escape.  The rest of the period involved heavy action at the head but no further points were scored.

            Morningstar started down for the third.  Kerber proved he could hang tough with his opponent by keeping him down initially, but ultimately, Morningstar leaped up for the escape.  Kerber looked for a takedown near the edge of the mat, but an out of bounds call sent the match into overtime.

            The two transitioned into sudden death overtime, and neither was able to score through a tough scramble.  Kerber was down for the first tiebreaker and got an escape just 10 seconds before the period ran out.  With Morningstar down for the second tiebreak period, Kerber kept his opponent down, but a controversial reversal call won the match for Morningstar 3-2.

141 Kyle Dake decision # 4 Reese Humphrey (Ohio State), 3-2

            Humphrey started the action with a single leg on Dake, but the freshman defended against the takedown. The Ohio State wrestler was then able to get the takedown he wanted, and a stalemate brought the action back to center.  Humphrey was cautioned, and Dake was able to escape before the end of the period.

            Humphrey started the second period neutral, and though both wrestlers looked hungry for points, no additional points were scored.

            Dake was down for the third period, and hopped to his feet for an escape.  Both wrestlers looked cautious the rest of the period and no more points were scored, bring the 2-2 match into overtime.

            No points were scored in the sudden death overtime.  In the first tiebreaker, Humphrey was down, and Dake held his opponent down for the 30 second period with numerous, heavy mat returns.  Dake was down for the second tiebreaker and escaped early.  He was warned for stalling, but ultimately came out on top with a 3-2 win to advance to the finals.

133 # 7 Mike Grey lose by decision # 8 Tyler Graff (Wisconsin), 5-14

            Graff took down Grey right at the start, but Grey escaped quickly.  With a double on Grey, Graff was then able to secure another takedown.  Grey escaped once more, but Graff responded with another takedown.  Grey escaped one last time before the time ran out on the period.

Grey was down to start the second period and earned a quick escape.  Graff went in straight away for a takedown, but Grey defended well and warded off the points for his opponent. 

Graff started the third period neutral.  Graff was able to get the takedown he was looking for, and Grey got another escape.  Graff earned one more takedown before the end of the period and with 1:25 of riding time, the Wisconsin wrestler secured his win of 5-14.

125 # 2 Troy Nickerson decision Brad Pataky (Penn State), 9-5

            Pataky started the match with a takedown over Nickerson.  The two went out of bounds, and back at center, Nickerson was able to get a reversal.  Pataky escaped shortly after   The Penn State wrestler then got in on a double to take down Nickerson, who escaped before the conclusion of the period.

            Pataky chose neutral for the second period and a great scramble ended with a takedown for Nickerson.  The Cornell senior, then captured his opponent on his back and looked for the pin but just came away with three near fall points. 

            Nickerson was down to start the third, and Pataky was cautioned early.  The Cornell wrestler escaped and no further points were scored in the match.  The final score was 9-5 in favor of Nickerson.

184 Steve Bosak win by fall Zack Giesen (Stanford), 0:31

            Bosak converted his opponent shot to a takedown straight to his back and pinned his second opponent of the day in 31 seconds.

165 Justin Kerber vs. # 3 Nick Marable (Missouri)

            Marable had a single and went in for the trip but Kerber was able to squirm free. The Missouri wrestler went in for a double, but Kerber defended and the two went out of bounds.  Kerber shot but could not get a leg. Then Marable shot, but he did not have success either. 

            The Cornell wrestler chose down for the second period, got right to his feed, and turned to face his opponent for the escape.  Kerber was warned after several shots by Marable, but got back into action to take his opponent to his back for a takedown and two near fall points.  With only two seconds left, Marable got the escape. 

            Marable was down for the third, and managed his escape 10 seconds into the period.  Kerber went in for a double and got a takedown, and again Marable captured a quick escape.  A stalemate call brought the action back to center.  Kerber was hit another stalling call and his opponent was awarded a point.  With a final score of 7-4, Kerber defeated the #3 seed.

133 # 7 Mike Grey decision Kendric Maple (Oklahoma), 7-3

            Grey captured an early takedown near the edge of the mat, but when the two wrestlers returned to center after an out of bounds call, the Oklahoma wrestler escaped.  Grey got one more takedown with just 20 seconds left in the first period.

            Maple was down to start the second. Grey remained on top for the first two minutes, but his opponent was able to get an escape.

            Grey chose down for the third period.  He earned the escape toward the end of the period and won the match with a final score of 7-3.

125 # 2 Troy Nickerson decision Ross Gitomer (Virginia), 4-0

            Though Nickerson looked ready for a takedown, he was unable to find the ideal shot and no points were scored in the first.

            Nickerson was down to start the second and grabbed a quick escape.  After numerous shots by Nickerson, Gitomer was warned for stalling then took some injury time.

            Gitomer chose neutral for the third period, but Nickerson met his opponent with a takedown.  The Cornell senior looked for a turn, but time ran out before he could get it.  With 1:07 of riding time, Nickerson won the match 4-0.

184 Steve Bosak win by fall # 8 Louis Caputo (Harvard), 3:29

            The first period between another matchup this season of Bosak and Caputo was scoreless.

            To start the second, Bosak was down and jumped up immediately for the escape.  He turned and grabbed a leg, and, using an inside trip, sent Caputo straight to the mat for the takedown.  Moments later, Bosak captured his opponent in a cradle and pinned him in 3:29.

197 # 4 Cam Simaz decision # 5 Trevor Brandvold (Wisconsin), 8-5

            Brandvold started out with a double leg to take down Simaz.  Simaz was eager to get up and Brandvold was warned, but he was unable to get the escape.

            The Wisconsin wrestler chose down in the second and escaped early, but Simaz countered with a double to get the takedown.  Brandvold managed one more escape bringing the score to 2-4 at the end of the second.

            Simaz chose down to start the third and escaped right away only to turn around to get a high crotch in on his opponent for the takedown.  A potentially dangerous call returned action back to the center, which resulted in an escape for Brandvold.  Simaz went right back at it, however, with another takedown.  After a stalemate call that returned action back to center, Simaz flattened him out and remained on top for the rest of the period.  With 1:11 of riding time, Simaz won with a final score of 8-5.

174 # 1 Mack Lewnes decision # 8 Colby Covington (Oregon State), 4-2
            Lewnes started with a single leg early nearly the edge of the mat but no takedown was awarded. The Cornell wrestler then got a double and sent his opponent to his back but neither a takedown  nor nearfall was awarded. Covington managed a single near the end of the period but Lewnes defended the points.

            Lewnes down to start second, and flipped then back out for the escape.  Covington was warned for stalling after numerous shots by Lewnes.  The Cornell junior then captured his opponent on his back but no points were awarded.

            Covington chose the down position for the third.  He was awarded the escape.  With no additional points and a 1-1 score, the two wrestlers went into sudden death overtime.

            Convinton got in on a leg with twenty seconds to go but Lewnes countered to capture his opponent's leg.  No points awarded and the two moved into tiebreakers.  Lewnes started down for the first tiebreaker period, and he got the escape with 20 seconds remaining.  With Covington down, Lewnes rode hard for the first 15 seconds, but ultimately, the Oregon State opponent was able to escape.  The two went back to sudden victory overtime and Lewnes got a single and used an outside trip to take his opponent down for the victory with a final score of 4-2.

165 Justin Kerber decision Paul Gillespie (Hofstra), 3-1
            The wrestlers pushed each other around the mat for the first period but not points were scored. 

            Gillespie chose down to start second. Kerber demonstrated a hard ride- flattened his opponent out and tried for the bar.  His ride kept his Hofstra opponent scoreless.

            Kerber was down to start the third, and after almost a minute managed an escape by climbing to his feet.  Kerber took down his opponent with just 30 second remaining to win the match with a final score 3-0 with 1:47 riding time.

174 # 1 Mack Lewnes vs. # 8 Colby Covington (Oregon State).

141 # 1 Kyle Dake win by major decision # 9 Levi Jones (Boise State), 11-0

     With a scoreless two minutes underway, Dake converted a shot from his opponent to his advantage to get the first takedown of the match.  Dake had just rolled his opponent two his back when the two went out of bounds. 

      Jones started down in the second and was cautioned for a false start.  The Boise state wrestler struggled to get up but between Dake's aggressive mat returns and his strength, Jones was unable to get up.  Instead, Dake was able to turn his opponent twice first earning two points of near fall and then three points of near fall.  The Cornell freshman kept his opponent down for the rest of the period.

      Dake started down in the third and got to his feet but was unable to get his opponents grip free, and Jones was warned for stalling.  The two went out, and, back at center, and Dake was able to stand for the escape. Determined, Dake captured a double leg and got another takedown.  With 2:09 of riding time and a final score of 11-0, Dake won his quarterfinal match.


10:01 am

133 # 7 Mike Grey decision John Trumbetti (Lock Haven), 6-1

   Trombetti surprised Grey early by sending him to his back, but Grey was able to flip out before a takedown was awarded.  The two scrambled went out, Trombetti shot, but Grey held off the points and a stalemate was called.  More congestion at the tie led to another stalemate call but still no points for either opponent.  Back at neutral Grey went in for a low single and  went hard to get the takedown in the waning seconds of the period.

     Grey started down in the second period, and popped up quickly to earn his escape point.  After numerous shots by Grey, Trombetti was warned for stalling.  Grey took several more shots, but no further points were secured.

     Trumbetti started in the down position, and Grey hungrily flattened his opponent the moment the whistle blew.  A minute later, however, the Lock Haven wrestler was able to pop up to his feet.  Trumbetti shot and Grey countered with a  go-behind to get another takedown.  With 1:22 of riding time, Grey won the match with a final score of 6-1.


9:45 a.m.
125 # 2 Troy Nickerson win by fall Ryan Mango (Stanford), 3:13
     Nickerson started his match with a quick takedown. The Cornell wrestler looked back points for over a minute, and finally secured the bar to get the three points he was looking for late in the period. 
     Mango chose down in the second, and Nickerson immediately turned his opponent for a commanding pin in 3:13.

Round Two Matches

9:48 pm

184 Steve Bosak decision Ben Clymer (Hofstra), 3-1

            The first period stayed scoreless, but there was a great deal of action at the head by both wrestlers.

            For the second period, the Hofstra wrestler chose down and got his escape early in the period.  The rest of the period continued with more shot attempts by both wrestlers but not points.

            Bosak was down to start the third and shot a low single but grappled for the double to takedown his opponent and win the match 2-1. 


8:10 pm

197 # 4 Cam Simaz major decision Micah Burak (Pennsylvania University), 12-4

            Simaz got a takedown 1:22 into the first.  The Penn wrestler got to his feet, however, and Simaz was unable to keep him down.  At the edge of the mat, Simaz went for a low single and before his opponent could struggle out, Simaz brought him back in for the takedown.  The two went out of bounds several times, but Simaz managed to keep him down throughout the period.

            The Cornell wrestler started in the down position in the second and earned his escape early.  Simaz grabbed a single but his opponent scrambled out before the takedown was awarded. 

            The Penn wrestler started down in the third, and go to his feet but was returned to the mat with a trip by Simaz.  Simaz keep his opponent down for the first minute, but Burak got the escape.  SImaz then got a takedown, and Burak escaped once more.  The Cornell wrestler grabbed one more takedown and allowed one more escape.  Simaz then went for one more takedown.  With 2:15 of riding time, Simaz secured a 12-4 win.

# 1 Mack Lewnes win by decision Jacob Ison (Ohio University), 13-1
Lewnes looked solid. With a quick single, the Cornell wrestler earned a takedown. When his opponent tried to flip out, Lewnes caught him to earn two nearfall points. With only 13 seconds remaining, Lewnes managed three more nearfall points.
Lewnes chose down in the second and got a quick escape. With one leg and an inside trip, Lewnes got another takedown and rode his opponent for the remainder of the period.
In the final period, the two wrestlers were neutral, and Mack managed one more takedown. With an impressive 3:44 of riding time, Lewnes won the match with a final score of 13-1.

165: Justin Kerber lose by decision # 1 Andrew Howe (Wisconsin), 11-3
Howe got a quick takedown followed by an escape by Kerber. How then got another takedown, and Kerber another escape. Kerber was then warned for stalling before being taken down again by Howe.
The Wisconsin opponent started down for the second and was able to get an escape after Kerber rode him for 50 seconds.
In the third period, Kerber chose the top position and was cautioned. As Howe got to his feet for an escape, Kerber attempted an inside trip to keep the opponent down but was unable to do so. Howe managed one more takedown and Kerber was warned one more time. The final match score was 14-3.

# 1 Kyle Dake vs. Elijah Nacita (CSU Bakersfield)
Dake came onto the mat with a mission. With tons of action in the first period, Dake got a takedown.
To start the second, Dake chose neutral. With a double leg sweet, Dake took his opponent down and sent him straight to his back earning two points of nearfall. But that was not the end: Dake turned his opponent one last time and sent him to his back to earn a pin in 4:48.

# 2 Troy Nickerson lose by decision Fred Santaite (Boston University), 1-2
Nickerson and his opponent remained scoreless going into the third, and Nickerson was able to earn an escape. With only two seconds remaining, his Boston University opponent earned a takedown to win the match with a final score of 1-2.

# 7 Mike Grey lose by decision # 10 Nick Fanthorpe (Iowa State), 2-5
Grey went for a double leg one minute into the start of the match, but the referee called a stalemate and no points were awarded. Determined, Grey went in for a single and finally got the takedown he was looking for initially. The Iowa State wrestler grabbed an escape then went for a single but Grey countered to ward keep his opponent from scoring.
Fanthorpe started down in the second and got a quick escape. Grey went for a low single, but his opponent counted and got the takedown. The rest of the period the Iowa State wrestler remained on top.
Grey chose down in the third but was never able to get back up, and Fanthorpe earned 1:33 of riding time to secure his win of 2-5.

285 Josh Arnone lose by decision Nathan Fernandez (Oklahoma), 1-3
Arnone got a single leg and went for an outside trip early in the period, but his opponent struggled outside the mat. The wrestlers continued with heavy action at the tie but no points were scored the first period.
For the second period, Arnone chose the down position. He managed to get to his feet 44 seconds into the period for the escape. Arnone stalked his opponent the rest of the period, but no additional points were scored.
To begin the third, Fernandez started down. Arnone was able to hold him for the first part of the period, but the Oklahoma wrestler ultimately earned the escape. Again, the rest of the period remained scoreless, so the match went into sudden death overtime.
Fernandez grabbed a takedown twenty seconds in, and quickly turned his opponent, but Arnone scrambled to his belly to save nearfall; however, the Oklahoma wrestler still collected points for the takedown and was awarded the win with a final score of 3-1.

197 # 4 Cam Simaz major decision Tyler Sorenson (S. Dakota State), 15-7

            In a high scoring match, Simaz started the action early with a single to get his first takedown.  Sorenson was able to get an escape shortly after, but Simaz countered with a  double leg sweep to get another takedown.  The Cornell wrestler then secured a tight waist coupled with a bar to earn three near fall points. 

            The South Dakota State wrestler chose down for the third and was warned for stalling.  Simaz used an ankle pick to keep his opponent down, but Sorenson grabbed the scape.  The Cornell Wrestler countered with a single converted to a double for the takedown, and, again, his opponent escaped.  Simaz tried for one more takedown but was unable to get the points before the end of the period.

            Simaz was down in the third and was able to get the reversal.  Sorenson escaped, and countered by taking down Simaz.  Simaz, however, got one final escape.  Combined with his 1:12 of riding time, the Cornell sophomore won the match 15-7.

184 Steve Bosak lose by decision # 3 Dustin Kilgore (Kent State), 5-6

            Both wrestlers were looking for shots throughout the beginning part of the first, but both defended the other well. Finally, Bosak got the single leg he was looking for to get the takedown.  With a nice tight waist and a bar, Bosak was seeking to turn his opponent but time ran out before he got the points.  He did, however, earn 1:53 of riding time over his opponent.

            Taking down in the second, Bosak flipped out for an early escape. Kilgore responded with a  takedown, but Bosak was able to get to his feet shortly after for an escape.  Kilgore managed one more takedown to finish out the period just at the edge of the mat.

            The Kent Sate wrestler chose down for the third and got an early reversal over Bosak.  Running down the riding time, Kilgore rode Bosak for a little over a minute.  Bosak earned himself an escape and looked for one final takedown but was unable to do so and lost the match 5-6.

174 # 1 Mack Lewnes decision Nathan Lee (Boise State), 5-2

            In a wild scramble one minute into the period, Mack Lewnes almost secured a takedown before the two wrestlers went out of bounds.  With 30 seconds remaining, Lewnes managed an incomplete single leg attempt that led to another scramble by the two wrestlers            then led to no points for either wrestler.

            To start the second, the Boise state wrestler chose down.   The wrestler battled hard for the escape and was ultimately awarded the escape Just under a minute into the second. Lee looked for a few shots but Lewnes countered to keep the score 0-1 in favor of the Boise State wrestler going into the third.

            Lewnes started in the down position in the third and earned a quick reversal just 10 seconds into the period.  Lee nabbed an escape with just over a minute remaining, but Lewnes was quick to rescure his dominance with a single leg takedown.  With typical Lewnes style, the Cornell wrestler trapped his opponents legs to flatten him out and almost grabbed some nearfall points but fell just short as the period came to an end.  Lewnes did earn 1:37 of riding time to finish the match out with a final score of 5-2.

165 Justin Kerber vs. Cody Yohn (Minnesota)

            The first period, all the action remained at the head as both wrestlers took turns pushing each other around the mat.  Each attempted a few singles but neither was able to get a hold of a leg.

            Yohn chose down for the second period and managed an escape quickly.  Kerber attempted a single leg then went for the waist of his opponent a minute and 30 seconds into the second but the Minnesota wrestler defended the takedown.

            To start the third, Kerber chose down and earned a quick reversal to bring him into the lead.  With heavy hips and a tight waist, Kerber earned two near fall points before flattening his opponent.  Yohn managed to gain some footing toward the end of the period but Kerber kept him down- earning 1:51 seconds of riding time and defeating his opponent 5-1 for his first NCAA victory.

141 # 1 Kyle Dake decision Todd Schavrien (Missouri), 4-1

            In the first period, Dake grabbed a takedown. Schavrien tried to escape with a couple of scrambles, but was kept down.  In a final scramble near the end of the period, the Missouri wrestler got he escape the was looking for.

            For the second period, Schavrien chose down, and Dake was ready for the challenge- impressively riding his opponent the entire period.  Schavrien tried to build to his feet several times, but Dake's mat returns kept his opponent down to keep the score 2-1.

            Dake chose the down position for the third and escaped with only 30 seconds remaining in the match.  Schavrien went for a single leg near the end of the period, but Dake's superior defense kept his opponent from scoring.  With 2:02 of riding time, freshman, top-ranked Kyle Dake won the match 4-1.

# 7 Mike Grey vs. Ben Ashmore (Arizona State)

Grey started the action early with a double leg sweep to take down his opponent.  The Arizona State wrestler then scrambled out for the escape.  Thirty seconds passed with no shots, then Grey was able to capture both his opponents legs for another takedown.  Bartelli attempted to escape by climbing to his feet, but Grey was able to keep him down as the two went out of bounds.  Back at center action, the Arizona State wrestler was able to get an escape, but with fifteen seconds remaining, Grey went in for a low single and was able to grab one last takedown before time ran out in the period.

     Grey chose the bottom position to start the second and was able to get a reversal a minute and thirty seconds in.  Bartelli escaped shortly after but Grey grabbed another takedown.  Finally, Bartelli got one more escape to end the second.

             In the third, Bartelli chose down and after being ridden for a minute a thirty seconds by the Cornell wrestler, he managed the escape.  There were several more takedown attempts from both wrestlers, but there were no more points on the board.  The final score with 3:08 of riding time was 9-2 in favor of Grey.

125 # 1 Troy Nickerson win by major decision Allen Bartelli (Boise State), 8-0
      Bartelli and Nickerson were heavy-handed for the first thirty seconds.  The Boise State wrestler got in on Nickerson's leg, but the Cornell wrestler was able to defend off a takedown and ultimately pounced on top of Bartelli to secure the takedown.  With both of his opponent legs trapped, Nickerson managed to turn Bartelli on his back and gain three near fall points.  The match looked like it was over for the Boise State wrestler, but the clock was in his favor and no pin was awarded in the first.
       Nickerson started down in the first and was quickly able to reverse his opponent.  Nickerson had a deep waist that looked dangerous for his opponent but the two went outside the mat before the Cornell wrestler could gain more back points. 
      Bartelli started neutral for the third.  Nickerson almost secured a low-single takedown at the edge of the mat but his opponent scrambled out of bounds.  With 3:19 of riding time, Nickerson won his first match of the tournament with a final score of 8-0.

285 Joshua Arnone lose by decision to Brendan Barlow (Kent State), 2-3
      Arnone and Barlow were scoreless for the two minutes, but Arnone pushed the action with a couple of low single attempts and heavy action on the collar.  With thirty second remaining in the first, Arnone was caught off guard with a low single from the Kent State wrestler, but an out of bounds call kept the match scoreless.
       Barlow started down for the second first and popped up quickly to bring the wrestlers back to neutral.  Arnone pushed his opponent around the mat, but there was no scoring the rest of the period.
       The Cornell wrestler started down for the third and brought the action back to neutral within seconds.  Seeming a bit more determined, Arnone really stepped up the action but a wrap around the waist caught the wrestler off guard and he was taken down with a throw.  Arnone quickly grabbed the escape and went for a low single near the edge of the mat but time ran out before the takedown was awarded.  The final score was 2-3 in favor of the Kent State Wrestler.
