Cornell Crowns Two Champs, Finishes Sixth At Ivy Chanpionship

PRINCETON, N.J. -- Sophomore Michael Cai won the 200 breast and Dean Holcomb finished second in the 200 butterfly on the final day of the 2010 Ivy League championship. Cornell finished sixth as a team with 863.5 points.

Cai's 1:57.17 in the 200 breast was an NCAA B time and broke his own school record set last year at the Ivy championshop by more than a second and a half. He remains the only Cornellian to post a sub-2:00 time in the event. He was backed up by Jake Fisher (12th, 2:05.14) and Julian Chan (14th, 2:06.22) in the C final.

Holcomb had a great 1:48.30 swim in the 200 butterfly, lowering his own career-best time by .2 seconds. That time is good for third all-time at Cornell. He was the lone scorer in the event.

The 1-meter diving competition saw Mike Sheppard post a 288.95 in the finals to place fourth overall, breaking his own Cornell record from last season's championship. Both Jonathan Zollo and Robert Lewis scored in the C level final.

Chris Keady had a solid swim for seventh in the 200 back in 1:48.62, good for seventh all-time at Cornell. Both Eric Anderson (1:51.18) and Jake Sangren (1:51.78) also scored in the B final.

Kevin Brazitis was the top finisher in the 100 free, and his time of 45.20 ranks among the top 10 in school history. Both Nick Campbell and Eric Gaffey made the B final and cmbined for 23 points.

Closing out the meet in the 400 free relay, Cornell placed fourth behidn the team of Brazitis, Gaffey, Steven Kwartler and Nick Campbell. The time of 3:01.71 was nearly four seconds better than the team's seed time.


PRINCETON, N.J. -- Dean Holcomb won an Ivy title with a school-record swim in the 400 IM as Cornell completed day two of the 2010 Ivy League championships on Friday afternoon at the DeNunzio Pool. The Big Red ended the day in sixth place with 568 points, less that 100 points behind third-place Penn.

Holcomb won the 400 IM with an NCAA B cut time of 3:52.94, nearly a second faster than runner-up Ryan Kikuchi of Brown and two seconds ahead of Holcomb's record that sat at 3:54.77 from last year's Ivy championship.

With two swimmers in the A final of the 100 breast, Michael Cai placed third in a strong 55.16 time, an NCAA B cut time, while Steven Kwartler was seventh in 56.49. Three other Cornellians scored in the event, with Jake FIsher placing 13th overall in 57.45.

Eric Anderson placed 13th in the 1650 free (16:09.35) as the only Big Red competitor in the event to start off the evening session. Following Anderson's swim, the 400 medley relay of Jake Sangren, Michael Cai, Mark Stepanian and Kevin Brazitis finished fifth in 3:30.97, a season-best time.

Cornell had three score in the B and C finals of the 100 butterfly, with Nick Campbell leading the way with a 13th-place finish in 49.59. Mark Stepanian tied for 15th (50.36), while James Keady was 24th (51.04).

In the 200 free, Chris Keady and Kevin Brazitis  each made the B final and combined for 29 team points, while Zac Mijares-Shafai placed second in the C final.

In the 100 back, freshman Jake Sangren swam a 49.57 in the finals for fifth place after going 49.41 in the prelims. Both Francisco Lacayo and Eric Gaffey also scored in the C final.

Rounding out the day was the 800 free relay team of Michael Cai, Chris Keady, Eric Gaffey and Dean Holcomb. THe group lowered its seed time by almost nine seconds with a 6:45.82 swim.

Tomorrow's day three concludes the Ivy meet.



ITHACA, N.Y. -- Cornell men's swimming and diving team set one school record and finished day one of the 2010 Ivy League championships in fourth place with 227.5 points on Thursday evening at DeNunzio Pool on Princeton's campus.

The first school record of the meet fell in the third event of the evening session as Michael Cai placed fifth in the 200 IM, with his time of 1:48.26 shaving .03 of Nick Campbell's time from a season ago. Campbell won the B final in 1:49.35, while Chris Keady was 11th in 1:50.54. Those three swimmers not only combined to score 61 team points, but continue to rank 1-2-3 all-time at Cornell at that distance.

The 200 free relay squad of James Keady, Kevin Brazitis, Steven Kwartler and Sasha Dobrolioubov placed third with the ninth-fastest time in school history, posting a 1:21.71. That time was a second and a half faster than its seed time.

Cornell's top finisher in the 500 free was Dean Holcomb, who finished tied for 18th and scored 6.5 team points. In the 50 free, Kevin Brazitis joined the school's top 10 list by winning the B final in a career-best 20.66. Steven Kwartler was also in the B final, placing 14th overall with a 20.80 in the final. James Keady led a four-swimmer charge in the C final by winning in a time of 20.67.

Closing out the evening was the 400 medley relay squad that placed fifth on the strength of swims by Jake Sangren, Michael Cai, James Keady and Sasha Dobrolioubov. The time of 3:20.73 earned Cornell 50 points and was the seventh-fastest mark in the event in school history.

Competition continues tomorrow for day two.
