Pannell Named Player of the Year, Men’s Lacrosse Places Five on All-Ivy Teams

5/4/2010 5:01:46 PM

ITHACA, N.Y. – Cornell sophomore Rob Pannell joined rare company this afternoon when he was named the Ivy League Player of the Year by the conference office, becoming just the fourth sophomore, and the first since Princeton's Ryan Boyle in 2002, to earn the league's top honor. Pannell was a unanimous selection for the award, voted on by the league's head coaches, and is the fifth Cornellian to be named Player of the Year during head coach Jeff Tambroni's 10 years at the helm of the Big Red program.

Pannell was joined on the All-Ivy first team by senior defenseman Pierce Derkac, while senior midfielder Austin Boykin was named second-team All-Ivy. Sophomore midfielder David Lau and junior defender Max Feely were both honorable mention selections. Other than Pannell, who was first-team All-Ivy in 2009, Cornell's other four All-Ivy selections are all first-time honorees.

Pannell, who was named the Ivy League Rookie of the Year and a third-team All-American last season, is currently ranked first in the nation in assists per game (3.00) and is fourth overall in points per game (4.69). A Tewaaraton Trophy nominee and a two-time Ivy League Player of the Week selection, he has registered five or more points in over half of the Big Red's 13 games and owns the seventh longest point-scoring streak in the nation, having registered a point in every game of his collegiate career (30 games). Earlier this season, Pannell tallied his 100th career point in just his 25th career game, becoming the fastest Cornell player to reach 100 career points since Tim Goldstein tallied 100 points in a single season over the span of 14 games in 1987.

Derkac has seen action in every game over the past three seasons and this year he has developed into the leader of the Cornell defense at the long-stick midfielder position. A finalist for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award for accomplishments on the field, in the classroom and in the community, Derkac serves as a team co-captain and has been an integral part of the Big Red's face-off unit. He currently ranks 34th in the nation with 4.08 ground balls per game and is second on the team in caused turnovers.

One of the team's unsung heroes, Boykin has proven to be one of the best short-stick defensive midfielders in the conference. He has seen an increased role each and every year and this season, he has taken on an added responsibility as the team's main option at the face-off X. Boykin has won 112-of-200 attempts (56.0%) and averages 3.0 ground balls per game.

Lau has seen action in all 13 games this season, making five starts as a member of the Big Red's offensive midfield. He has tallied nine goals and five assists on the year, registering eight of his 14 total points during Ivy League action.

Feely moved into a starting role last season and this year has become a dominant presence on a Big Red defense that ranks 12th in the nation, allowing just 8.62 goals per game. He has become one of the premier shutdown defenders and has picked up 25 ground balls and caused 13 turnovers.

Cornell will host the inaugural Ivy League Men's Lacrosse Tournament this weekend at Schoellkopf Field in Ithaca. The top-seeded Big Red will play in the second of two semifinal games on Friday night, facing fourth-seeded Brown in an 8 p.m. contest. The day begins with second-seeded Princeton battling third-seeded Yale in a 5 p.m. matchup in the first semifinal. The championship game will be played on Sunday at noon. The latest information for fans visiting Schoellkopf Field for this weekend's action can be found here.
