Women’s Tennis Welcomes Four Newcomers

ITHACA, N.Y. – Mike Stevens, The Carl H. Meinig '31 Head Coach of Women's Tennis at Cornell University, got his first look at the Big Red class of 2014, as he welcomed four newcomers to East Hill this week. The team welcomes four rookies to the squad – twin sisters Kelly and Shannon Comolli (Newburyport, Mass.), Elizabeth Kaufman (Potomac, Md.) and Ryann Young (Northbrook, Ill.).

Player Biographies


Kelly Comolli – 5-8 – Newburyport, Mass.
(Philips Exeter Academy)

Comolli lettered twice at Phillips Exeter Academy, playing at No. 1 singles and at No. 1 doubles with her twin sister Shannon. With her sister, she won the main doubles draw at the Summer Circuit ITA regional held at Cornell's Reis Tennis Ceter in 2010. In 2009, she moved into the top four in the New England under-18 rankings. Comolli also played for the New England Zonal Team, as well as Team New England. She lettered four times in basketball, serving as team captain twice, and lettered one time in field hockey. Comolli graduated as the third highest scorer in girls' basketball history at Phillips Exeter.

Shannon Comolli – 5-7 – Newburyport, Mass.

Comolli lettered twice at Phillips Exeter Academy, playing at No. 2 singles and at No. 1 doubles with her twin sister Kelly. With her sister, she won the main doubles draw at the Summer Circuit ITA regional held at Cornell's Reis Tennis Ceter in 2010. She won the New England Prepartory Schools doubles championship as a freshman and sophomore. In 2009, she moved into the top four in the New England under-18 rankings. Comolli also lettered four times in basketball, serving as team captain twice and being named a New England Prep schools all-star as a senior.

Elizabeth Kaufman –5-8 – Potomac, Md.
(Winston Churchill HS)

Kaufman played two years of tennis at Winston Churchill high school, seeing action at No. 1 singles. She helped her team to a state and a regional championship.

Ryann Young – 5-4 – Northbrook, Ill.
(St. Stephen's Episcopal School)

Young lettered four times at St. Stephen's Episcopal School, playing at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles, and was named the school's Superior Senior Achievement award winner. She was ranked as high as No. 69 on TennisRecruiting.com and was ranked No. 3 in the state of Texas for girls under-18. Prior to that, Young had been ranked No. 1 in Chicago for girls under-14.
