CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- The Cornell baseball team closed out its trip to Virginia on Saturday, falling to the eighth-ranked Cavaliers and to Rider to fall to 0-4 on the year. The Big Red fell to Virginia, 14-2, before losing by an 8-2 margin against Rider in the second game of the day.

Mickey Brodsky led the Cornell offense on Saturday, going 3-for-7 with a double, a run scored and one driven in. Marshall Yanzick and Ben Swinford both picked up a pair of hits, with Swinford driving in a run. Ryan Plantier also slugged his first career home run in the loss to the Broncs.

On the mound, Jadd Schmeltzer got the start against the Cavaliers, working five innings and allowing three earned runs on six hits and three walks while striking out three. Brodsky started against Rider and worked three innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits, striking out one.

In the opener, Virginia scored two runs in the second and two more in the fourth, but broke the game open with a six-run seventh, making the score 10-0. The Big Red offense got going in the top of the eighth, with Brenton Peters hitting a two-out double, moving to second on Brodsky's single. Brandon Lee, Frank Hager and Phil Mullan then followed with three straight walks, forcing in both Peters and Brodsky, but Swinford struck out swinging to end the Cornell rally.

Virginia would tack on four more runs in the bottom half of the inning off of Connor Kaufmann to provide the final margin.

In the second game of the day, Rider scored in the top of the first, but Cornell knotted the score in the bottom half of the inning. Yanzick led off with a double, then scored on Swinford's two-out single to left. In the third, though, the Broncs took the lead, scoring a pair of runs off of Brodsky, but Plantier cut the lead to one with his home run in the fourth, a solo shot to left to lead off the inning.

Rider would add runs in the fifth and sixth innings, then scored another pair in the top of the ninth to stretch the lead to 8-2, where it would finish.

Cornell returns to action next weekend, traveling to Philadelphia for a trio of games against area teams. The Big Red will play at Temple on Friday before facing St. Joseph's on Saturday and Villanova on Sunday.
