ITHACA, N.Y. -- A third chukker scoring flurry by the Cornell women's polo team sealed an unbeaten season, giving the Big Red the 13th national title in program history with an 18-10 triumph over the University of Virginia on Saturday afternoon at the Oxley Equestrian Center. Cornell ended the season with a 21-0 record.
Cornell jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, including a long two-point goal by Lizzie Wisner. Virginia scored on a penalty to get within 4-1 at the end of the first chukker.
Virginia cut the deficit to 4-2 just 45 seconds into the chukker, then got within 4-3 and 5-4 before a long two-pointer put the Cavaliers ahead 6-5 with two minutes remaining in the half. The Big Red tied it up with 34 seconds left to send the teams into the halftime intermission tied at 6-6.
Cornell wasted little time regianing the lead, as Wisner scored less than 30 seconds into the third, but Virginia equalized at 7-7. Wisner again put the home team back in front with a penalty shot to go up 8-7 with a little more than five minutes to play in the third.
Virginia knotted the game up again at 8-8, but a two-pointer on a change offf possession made it 10-8. Another quick Big Red goal off the re-start made it 11-8 with just under two minutes to play. Another score came just another 30 seconds later and all of a sudden it was 12-8. The run continued as Cornell went up 13-8 with 24 seconds to play in the chukker.
Kailey Eldredge opened the fourth with a two-point goal to extend the lead to 15-8, and Cornell wouldn't be threatened the rest of the way.
