ITHACA, N.Y. -- Cornell football is off an running. Under second-year head coach Kent Austin, the importance of being the best-conditioned team in the Ivy League was evident on a sunny first day of fall camp at Schoellkopf Field.
"I felt like we came out of spring a much better football team," Austin said. "I think the guys are in much better shape. They're bigger, stronger, faster right now. We'll see if we can maintain that. We have more depth now. I'm really impressed by some of the younger players we have here."
The Big Red brought 107 players to camp, including several new names who appeared on the roster for the first time on Tuesday as training camp opened. Transfers
Beau Sweeney (California) at quarterback and safety
Josh Barut (UCLA) joined four freshmen walk-ons: place-kicker
Michael Dola (Arlington, Va.), long-snapper
Dylan Chayes (Oceanport, N.J.), defensive lineman
Will Hutton (Wilderness, Conn.) and offensive lineman Lawrence Nault (Orlando, Fla.).
The team showed up on campus for good on Monday and received their playbooks, met with their position coaches as introductions, went through compliance meetings and went through physicals. The players and their families enjoyed a welcome barbecue with the players, with the night ending with a team meeting.
An early breakfast opened the day, with special teams meetings and an on-field conditioning test dollowing. After lunch, the players received treatments before hitting the practice field for a 2:45 p.m. start of practice.
In shorts, jerseys and helmets, the group went through a full practice of two and a half hours with high intensity.
