ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell football team was picked to finish seventh in the 2011 Ivy League preseason media poll announced this morning as part of a conference call with the Ancient Eight's head coaches. Overall, there were 17 voters in the poll (two media representatives per school and one national media representative).
Penn was the top choice in the poll with 12 first place votes and 129 points, with Harvard just behind with two first-place ballots and 118 points. Yale, who was picked third, received one first-place vote, while fourth-place Brown was the top pick on two ballots.
The 2011 Big Red returns 40 letter winners and 22 total starters nine offense, eight defense, five special teams) from last year's 2-8 squad. Included are reigning Ivy League Rookie of the Year Jeff Mathews and All-Ivy selections Rashad Campbell at corner back and defensive end Zack Imhoff.
The Big Red begins the 2011 season on Saturday, Sept. 17 against Bucknell on Schoellkopf Field at 6 p.m.
