#6 Men's Squash Breezes By Hamilton, Bates

1/23/2012 11:57:00 AM

CLINTON, N.Y. — The men's squash team improved to 8-2 on Sunday with a pair of 9-0 victories over Hamilton and Bates at Hamilton's Little Squash Center.

The Big Red, tabbed sixth in the most recent College Squash Association rankings, won 16 of the 18 matches in straight sets with another ending early when an opponent retired after the first two sets. Hamilton was ranked 24th and Bates was ranked 18th heading into the weekend's matches.

Junior Nick Sachvie rolled at the No. 1 position, dropping just 17 total points on the day. Senior Tom Spettigue rallied from two sets down against Hamilton's Martin Bawden in the morning's No. 2 match to secure a 9-11, 9-11, 11-5, 11-9, 11-8 victory before rolling at No. 3 against Bates' R.J. Keating in the afternoon, 11-2, 11-7, 11-8.

Senior Will Hartigan, junior Owen Butler and sophomore Bryan Keating each won both of their respective matches on the day to improve to 9-1 on the season, the best individual mark for Big Red players who have competed in each match so far this season.

Up next for Cornell is a 6 p.m. Wednesday match at fourth-ranked Rochester (5-2)
with Rochester, which defeated the Big Red twice last season — 5-4 in a regular-season match at Belkin International Squash Courts, then 7-2 in the quarterfinal of the Potter Cup — the sport's national championship playoffs.

While Rochester has won its last four matches against Cornell over the past two seasons, the Big holds a 55-14 edge in the all-time series. The Yellowjackets' two losses this year came to No. 3 Princeton, 6-3, and soon-to-be No. 1 Yale, 5-4.
