VANCOUVER, B.C. – Cross country freshman Sam Baxter capped an impressive rookie campaign by placing ninth at the Canadian National Cross Country Junior Championships on Saturday.
Baxter saved his best race for the end of the season after making progress throughout the fall. Running the eight-kilometer course in 25:08.89, Baxter bettered his performance at October's Princeton Invitational by 10 seconds and was an impressive 48 seconds better than his September showing at the Paul Short Invitational.
Nearly 150 athletes competed at the Canadian National Cross Country Junior Championships, and Baxter, a Kitchener, Ontario native, was only 15 seconds shy of a top-five finish.
Baxter, who was one runner away from making the roster for the Big Red's Heptagonal Championship, will transition to mid-distance running during the track season that begins on Saturday with the Cornell Relays. Baxter had high school track bests of 3:58 for the 1,500-meter race and 8:37 in the 3K.
