ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell women had one of their best season-opening Cornell Relays meets in years, winning seven events and producing 6 ECAC qualifiers across the spectrum of events. Playing host to 16 other schools and several club teams, the Big Red got the indoor season off to a strong start on Friday and Saturday in Barton Hall.

Cornell also saw a school record tied and a freshman record broken to go along with six alterations to the all-time top 10 lists.

Things got off to a terrific start on Friday in the pentathlon. Freshman Hillary Holmes put together a great string of efforts (9.13 60 hurdles, 5' 5” high jump, 18' 4 1/4” long jump, 31' 11 1/4” shot put and 2:30.32 800 meters) to score 3,605 points. That was good enough to not only win the event and qualify for ECACs but set a new school freshman record and sit No. 3 all-time at Cornell.

Junior Dominique Corley was also extremely impressive, placing second in her first-ever multi-event. Corley totaled 3, 376 points (No. 37 all-time at Cornell) and in the process long jumped 18' 11 3/4”, an ECAC qualifier and tied for No. 10 all-time at Cornell). Freshman Stephanie Izard did a good job in her first college pentathlon, placing sixth with 3,090 points. And junior Shannon Daniels (seventh, 2,936) and sophomore Abbie Clifford (eighth, 2,916) had strong multi-event debuts as well.

The Cornell women were tremendous in the field on Saturday as well. Senior co-captain Ailish Hanly got the ball rolling on Saturday morning by winning the high jump with an ECAC-qualifying clearance of 5' 8”, an indoor personal record by one inch and tied for No. 4 all-time at Cornell. In second was junior Jennifer Bush, who was over 5' 5” for second. Freshman Elizabeth Crissy (fourth) and junior Sarah Sherman (sixth) both were over 5' 3”.

In the pole vault, the senior duo of Claire Dishong and Lindsay Patterson were outstanding. Dishong tied the school record of Natalie Gengel '10 with a clearance of 12' 9 1/2” while Patterson was over 11' 9 3/4” to get the ECAC standard.

In the horizontal jumps, Holmes came back to place fourth in the long jump (11' 1/2”), and junior Kelley Roach was sixth in the triple jump (36' 9 1/2”). In the throws, freshman Camryn Goodman made her Cornell debut by placing seventh in the shot put at 35' 6 3/4” and ninth in the weight throw at 40' 4 3/4”.

The Big Red made an impact on the track as well. One of the real highlights came in the long sprints. Junior Ryan Woolley led the Big Red to four of the top five places in the 500 as she won the event in a personal-best time of 1:15.40, easily an ECAC qualifier. Sophomore Emily Woodford was third in 1:16.90 while classmate Zena Kolliesuah was fourth at 1:17.03 and senior co-captain Libby O'Brien was fifth at 1:17.35.

A bit later, in the 300, junior Ebolutalese Airewele stormed to victory with a terrific early-season run of 40.08, good for No. 9 all-time at Cornell. Sophomore Katie Woodford also ran well for a December 300, crossing the line second in 40.28. In the 60 hurdles, sophomore Mina Alexis-Amick had a pair of impressive races on Saturday, culminating in Saturday's final where she ran 8.98 to place second. Also placing second was fellow sophomore Christine Driscoll, who ran 18:17.04 in the 5000, looking very strong in leading the vast majority of the race. Another top-five individual effort came from senior Mercy Gbenjo, who was fifth in the 60 at 8.06.

The Cornell women showed very good depth in the relays, placing first and second in both the 4x800 and the 4x400. In the 4x800, sophomore Tess Berghoff, junior Andrea Sielicki, senior Liz Reamer and senior Marie McKenna ran 9:42.63 while the freshmen quartet of Halle Heiden, Sarah van der Elst, Sarah Holl and Kate McCormick ran 9:51.09. In the 4x400, two Cornell relays dipped under 4:00 and within half of a second of each other as the Big Red posted times of 3:58.69 and 3:59.23. Earlier, in the distance medley relay, Cornell placed third and fourth as Berghoff, sophomore Elyse Wilkinson, Heiden and Holl ran 12:42.99 and Kate McCormick, Sielicki, McKenna and freshman Meghan McCormick ran 12:52.03.

Exams at Cornell start in the next week, so the Big Red track and field teams will return to competition in January. Next up will be the Southern Tier Collegiate Invite, in Barton Hall, on Jan. 4 and then a trip to Penn State on Jan. 12 for a five-way meet in State College, Pa.
