Flo Wrestling Interview Dake
ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The Big Red wrestling team advanced a school record three wrestlers to the NCAA finals on Friday night.
Kyle Dake (157),
Steve Bosak (184) and
Cam Simaz (197) will all wrestle in the finals on Saturday at the Scottrade Center.
Frank Perrelli (125) and
Mike Nevinger (141) will wrestle in the place matches on Saturday morning. The Big Red's five All-Americans ties its school record that it set last season. Cornell is in fourth place after Session IV. Simaz is just the fourth four-time All-American for Cornell.
At 157 pounds, Dake dominated Ganbayar Sanjaa of American during their entire semifinal bout. Sanjaa evaded Dake as much as possible and kept flat on the mat when Dake was in control. The two were scoreless after the first period, but Dake took the lead in the second with a reversal. Sanjaa was hit with two stalling penalty points. Sanjaa chose neutral in the third and evaded Dake's shots, but Dake's efforts led him to a 4-0 decision. Dake will look for his third NCAA title on Saturday against the No. 2 seed Derek St. John of Iowa.
Junior
Steve Bosak advanced to his first NCAA final at 184 pounds. He defeated Appalachian State's Austin Trotman (9) 4-2 in overtime. Trotman took Bosak down in the first period, but Bosak quickly escaped. Bosak escaped from his starting down position in the second to tie the bout at 2-2. Trotman chose neutral for the third, but neither wrestler scored. Bosak notched a sudden victory takedown to win, 4-2. Bosak will face Penn State's Quentin Wright, the No. 6 seed, in the finals.
At 197 pounds,
Cam Simaz wrestled a high energy match against Oklahoma State's Cayle Byers. Simaz notched a takedown in the first period, but Byers would escape. Each wrestler escaped from their starting down positions, but with another takedown and riding time Simaz won a 6-3 decision. Simaz advanced to his first NCAA final and will wrestle the No. 2 seed, Chris Honeycutt of Edinboro.
At 125 pounds, Perrelli was edged out in overtime, 3-2, in the semifinals by Penn State's Nicholas Megaludis. Perrelli will wrestle the No. 8 seed Ryan Mango on Saturday morning in the consolation semifinals.
At 141 pounds, Nevinger defeated Minnesota's Nick Dardanes, 5-2, in the wrestlebacks to become an All-American. Nevinger lost a 9-3 decision to No. 4 Michael Mangrum of Oregon State. Nevinger will wrestle Darius Little (8) of North Carolina State for seventh place.
The place matches begin at 10 a.m. The finals will start at 6:30 p.m.
