ITHACA, N.Y. – Four members of the Cornell women's hockey team were named to the Canadian National Team over the weekend and will compete for Canada in the World Championships on April 7-14 in Burlington, Vt.
Forwards
Rebecca Johnston and
Brianne Jenner made the team, as did the defensive tandem of
Laura Fortino and
Lauriane Rougeau. The quartet is quite familiar with the national spotlight, as all four of them were on the national roster for the 4 Nations Cup in November.
Johnston, the ECAC Hockey and Ivy League Player of the Year as a senior, won the gold medal playing with Canada at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Jenner, who had an incredible 58 points as a sophomore this season, was one of the last cuts from that Olympic team but has since been a regular with Hockey Canada.
Rougeau, the ECAC Hockey Best Defensive Defenseman, will be looking to once again make a mark with the international spotlight shining. Fortino, a Patty Kazmaier Top 10 Finalist, already made a mark with the only goal in a 1-0 Canada victory over the United States in an exhibition on Saturday.
Cornell's four players on the team is more than any current university. Cornell head coach
Doug Derraugh will also be joining his players as an assistant coach for Canada.
The World Championships begin on Saturday with Canada once again taking on the U.S. at 7 p.m. eastern. Canada continues its gold-medal quest with preliminary-round action against Finland on April 8 and Russia on April 10. Canada will then advance to either the quarterfinals on April 11 or earn a bye to the semifinals on April 13.
