ITHACA, N.Y. – Cornell women's lacrosse senior attack
Jessi Steinberg has been named the WomensLax.com Player of the Week, the site announced Monday.
Steinberg earned the award thanks to a four-goal, one-assist effort against then-No. 16 Princeton. Her fourth goal of the game proved to be the overtime game-winner, and the Big Red defeated its first ranked team since beating Harvard on March 3.
The win was just the fourth against Princeton in program history and Cornell's second in as many trips to the Tigers' home field.
Steinberg has scored at least four goals in five games this season and has recorded at least a hat trick in her last four games. She is on pace to become the second-best goal scorer in Cornell history by the end of the year and could become the program's all-time leading scorer with 22 more goals.
The Big Red is in the midst of its toughest stretch of the year. Five ranked teams in a row are in the way, and Cornell has split those games 1-1 so far. No. 6 Dartmouth is coming to Ithaca on Saturday for a 5 p.m. contest in Schoellkopf Field.
The contest will be a “Pink Game” to raise awareness for breast cancer. The men's and women's teams are selling T-shirts for $10, with proceeds going to Finger Lakers Cancer Resource Center. The shirts are available now and will be sold at the women's and men's game on Saturday.
