ITHACA, N.Y. -- Sam Hurster found himself open in front of the net with 4.7 seconds remaining and finished off the upset for Brown, knocking off No. 3 Cornell 10-9 on Saturday afternoon at Schoellkopf Field. The Bears improved to 6-7 (2-3 Ivy), while the Big Red dropped to 9-2 (4-1 Ivy).
The loss ruined Cornell's Senior Day celebration and snapped it's national-best 15-game win streak. It also dropped the Big Red a game behind Princeton in the standings heading into next weekend's showdown in New Jersey. The winner of that game will host the Ivy League tournament.
Max Van Bourgondien scored three goals and added an assist, including scoring the game-tying goal on a superb individual effort with 58 seconds to play to knot the game up at 9-9.
Connor English chipped in two goals and an assist, while
Steve Mock and
Chris Langton each scored twice.
Andrew West made 10 saves in goal.
Doug Tesoriero won 15-of-20 face-offs for the Big Red, but the Bears came up with the biggest of the game with under a minute to play to set up Hurster's goal on a pinpoint feed from Parker Brown. Hurster and Brown had been a part of late goals at the end of the first and second quaters, with Hurster finding Phil Pierce on the doorstep with two seconds to play in the first and Brown hitting Piroli out front for a score with 20 seconds to play before halftime. Those three end of quarter scores proved to be the difference.
Brown took advantage of plenty of Cornell miscues in the first half to take a 5-3 lead into the locker room. The Big Red held a decisive 18-11 edge in shots over the first 30 minutes, but the combination of Round (nine saves) and Piroli (two goals) had the Bears in front.
After taking an early 2-0 lead, Brown's defense toughened and Cornell had numerous unforced turnovers in the settled offense as the Bears came roaring back. Langton got hteh ome team on the board just 52 seconds in, then made it 2-0 midway through the quarter on English's goal.
It was all Brown over the final 22 minutes of the half, outscoring the Big Red 5-1. The killers were the late scores at the end of both the first and second quarters. The Bears took a 3-2 lead with two seconds to play in the first when Sam Hurster found Phil Pierce for a goal. Piroli then got loose for a backbreaking score with 20 seconds left before halftime to give the Bears the two-goal advantage.
English got Cornell back on the board and cut the deficit to one at 5-4 three and a half minutes into the third.and a half minutes in, and after Brown answered back, Van Bourgondien scored himself, then assisted on Mock's game-tying goal with 3:37 left in the third.
The game would be tied again at 7-7, 8-8 and 9-9 before Hurster cashed in the game-winning goal.
Cornell and Princeton will meet on Saturday, April 28 at 7 p.m. in New Jersey. The Big Red would clinch a share of the Ivy Leauge title and would get the opportunity to host the conference tournament for the third straight year with a win. The Tigers would claim the solo title and would host the tournament for the first time if it can top the Big Red.
