ITHACA, N.Y. — For the third time this season, sophomore
Connor Kaufmann has been named the Ivy League's Pitcher of the Week. Kaufmann shares this week's honor with Dartmouth's Kyle Hunter, giving him at least a share of the award for the third time in the last four weeks.
Kaufmann tossed his second shutout of the season on Saturday, yielding just three hits while striking out a season-high six. Just one Penn runner reached second base in the game, but Kaufmann got the next batter to ground into an inning-ending double play. He then retired the final 10 batters of the game, striking out the side in the seventh. It was Kaufmann's second shutout of the season, with the first coming on April 1 in a no-hitter against Dartmouth. He became the ninth pitcher in program history to toss two shutouts in the same season.
Kaufmann has been particularly dominant in Ivy League play this season, with a 3-0 record and 0.66 earned-run average and 16 strikeouts in four league starts. He hasn't surrendered an earned run in his last 15 innings of work.
Cornell (27-11-1, 13-3 Ivy) hosts Binghamton in a non-league game at 4 p.m. Wednesday before attempting to lock up the Ivy League Lou Gehrig Division title this weekend against Princeton.
