ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell men's swimming and diving team won five events, including a sweep of the diving events by Phillip Truong and the breaststroke by Victor Luo, but Yale's depth was too much as the Bulldogs topped the Big Red 176-124 on Monday afternoon at Teagle Pool. The Big Red is 0-5 in dual meet action this season.
Truong led a 1-2 Big Red sweep in the 3-meter competition, scoring a 318.38 to hold off teammate Jon Zollo (309.90) for first. He also won the 1-meter event with a 312.89.
Cornell won three swimming events as well, beginning with consecutive wins by Victor Luo (58.36) in the 100 breast and Michael Reynolds (1:51.65) in the 200 fly. Luo came back for his second medal of the day after touching first in the 200 breast (2:06.16).
The Big Red's A team in the 200 medley relay of Taylor Adams, Eric May, Reynolds and Chris Myers earned a hard-fought second in 1:34.39, while the free relay team of Harry Harpham, Henry Scott, Will Middleton and Myers also earned a second in 3:08.97.
Junior Taylor Wilson (9:51.62) and freshman Mitch Johnson (9:55.21) earned a 2-3 finish in the 1000 free, while Harpham placed second in the 200 free with a 1:41.78 swim. Reynolds win in the 200 fly overshadowed a strong effort by Ben Catanese for second (1:52.29). Catanese was also second in the 200 back (1:52.37). Myers placed second in the 50 free sprint in 21.23 and Jack Pollack was the runner-up in the 500 free (4:44.73), more than four seconds ahead of third place.
