ITHACA, N.Y. – Cornell record-breaking All-America quarterback Jeff Mathews has accepted an invitation to participate in the 89th East-West Shrine Game on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014 at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla. The game will be televised on the NFL Network at 4 p.m..

The longest-running college all-star game in the country, the East-West Shrine Game has been around since 1925 and has featured some of the greatest college players in history, including: Tom Brady, John Elway, Brett Favre, Roger Staubach, Dick Butkus, Gayle Sayers and Walter Payton. Benefiting Shriners Hospitals for Children, the players showcase their talents and skill on the East-West Shrine Game gridiron in hopes to earn the coveted spot on an NFL roster.

Mathews ended his career as the most prolific quarterbacks in Ivy League history and one of the best in college football. He ranks among the top 20 all-time in career passing yards in the FCS and set the Ivy League's all-time passing record by more than 2,000 yards. He ended his career with 47 Big Red school records and 18 Ivy League marks for passing and total offense.

Mathews accounted for at least three touchdowns in six of his nine games this past season. The three-year team captain was named one of 16 finalists for the National Football Foundation's William V. Campbell Trophy that recognizes the top football scholar-athlete in the nation. The three-time All-Ivy selection is a Capital One Academic All-District first-team selection and a two-time finalist for the Bushnell Cup for the Ivy League Offensive Player of the Year, winning in 2011.

Mathews is the fifth Cornellian to accept an invite to the East-West Shrine game, joining offensive lineman Kevin Boothe (2005), running back Ed Marinaro (1971), end Jose Martinez-Zorrilla (1932) and fullback Bart Viviano (1932).

Since 1925, the East-West Shrine Game has played an important role in raising awareness of the amazing work done by Shriners Hospitals for Children. The 20 health care facilities in the United States and one in both Mexico and Canada provide advanced care for children with orthopaedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries and cleft lip and palate. More than 100 players from the 88th East-West Shrine Game signed with NFL teams in 2013. Members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame include 71 players who competed in the all-star game.
