PRINCESS ANNE, Md. — Sophomore
JD Whetsel drove in senior
Spenser Souza with the winning run, as the baseball team won in dramatic fashion again with a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over Saint Peter's on Saturday afternoon at the UMES Tournament.
Cornell trailed by two runs in the top of the fourth, then scored single runs in the fourth, eighth and ninth innings to improve to 2-1 on the young season. Sophomore
Matt Hall was 3-for-4 with an RBI, leading the way among the Big Red's five players with multiple hits.
Once again, Cornell got more terrific pitching on the afternoon. Sophomore
Nick Busto made his first career weekend start and went six innings for the no-decision. He fanned four while walking just one, with the only blemish on the scoreboard coming when the Peacocks plated a pair of runs in the fourth to take a 2-0 lead.
The Big Red answered immediately to cut its deficit in half. Sophomore
Kevin Tatum hit a two-out double to right in the bottom of the fourth, then came around to score on Hall's single to center. Cornell then tied the game in the eighth after a pair of leadoff infield singles by Whetsel and Tatum. Whetsel scored the tying run on a passed ball.
With Cornell serving as the home team, it had the final at-bat in the bottom of the ninth. Souza led off with an infield single, then stole second. Peters' groundout to first was the second out of the inning, but it also advanced Souza to third. That allowed the senior co-captain to score easily on Whetsel's single to center.
Freshman
Michael Byrne got the victory in his first collegiate appearance, tossing three innings of scoreless relief. He had four strikeouts, including a called third strike on St. Peter's leadoff man Matt Mancini to leave the bases loaded in the seventh.
The Big Red wraps up the weekend with a game at 11:30 a.m. Sunday against tournament host Maryland-Eastern Shore. Cornell defeated the Hawks in extra innings on Friday's in the tournament opener.
