DAVIDSON, N.C. — Matt Hall and Ryan Plantier hit RBI doubles to highlight the baseball team's three-run sixth inning in a 3-2 victory Wednesday at Davidson. It's the fourth straight win for the Big Red, which swept the Wildcats in a two-game series in a pair of one-run games.

Just like in Tuesday's opener, Davidson took the lead in the second inning. But that was all the Wildcats could muster off junior Zach McCulley, who went five innings to earn the victory in his first start with the Big Red. He struck out four, scattering five hits with a pair of walks.

Cornell's offense threatened in the fourth, but stranded the bases loaded. Tom D'Alessandro led off the sixth with a single to left, then he stole second – one of four Big Red stolen bases on the night. Hall followed with a double to right, allowing D'Alessandro to score and cut Cornell's deficit to 2-1.

After the first out of the frame, Plantier hit a double to right center to drive in Hall. Plantier then scored the winner with an unearned run when Ben Swinford reached on an error with a ball that was hit to shortstop.

Freshman Michael Byrne was terrific in relief, earning a rare four-innings save while surrendering just one hit. The Wildcats were still able to threaten in the ninth, even though Byrne struck out the first two batters of the frame. Davidson put the potential tying run on base via catcher's interference, the Byrne's lone walk placed runners at first and second. But the lefty followed by fanning his fifth batter of the game, striking out the side to end the game.

Senior Brenton Peters was the lone player with the Big Red to have multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with a stolen base. He is now 9-for-16 (.563) over his last four games. Senior Spenser Souza also singled in the second inning to push his hitting streak to 11 games.

Cornell (8-5) will enjoy its final off day of the Spring Break trip on Thursday before kicking off a three-game weekend series at Villanova. Games are at 3:15 p.m. Friday, 1:15 p.m. Saturday and 12:15 p.m. Sunday, closing out the team's season-opening 16-game stretch of games away from home.
