ITHACA, N.Y. – The Big Red men's lightweight rowing team swept Princeton today in ideal rowing conditions on the Cayuga Lake Inlet to earn back-to-back Platt Cups for the first time since winning four straight from 2004-07. Cornell won all four races, including a comeback victory in the varsity eight, as the Big Red eventually overtook the Tigers to win by a length.
“This is the type of mature racing we were looking to create in the first of four home races that will take us through to the end of the season and catapult the crews into the championship season in May and June,” says
Chris Kerber, the Henry E. Bartels '48 Head Coach of Lightweight Rowing.
The Platt Cup was placed in competition in 1967 and is given annually to the winner of the varsity eight race between Cornell and Princeton. It is given in honor of the late Phillip Platt '60, who rowed for Cornell in the late '50s. A crewmate of Platt's, Dr. Richard Schwartz, obtained the funds for a trophy from his former Big Red oarsmen. Platt rowed on the 1957 heavyweight freshman crew under Coach Carl Ullrich and then moved to the lightweights under Coach Walt Schlaepfer. The victory today marks the 14th time Cornell has earned the Platt Cup, with Princeton taking home the cup 36 times.
Cornell will return to action tomorrow, when it welcomes Yale to the Cayuga Lake Inlet.
