ITHACA, N.Y. -- Another day, another organization recognizing the fine play of Cornell senior Jeff Mathews. This time, the record-setting quarterback has been put on the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award and College Football Performance Award Performer of the Year watch lists.

Mathews is one of 30 quarterbacks on the Unitas watch list and the only player in the Football Championship Subdivision. The other 29 candidates are all BCS players. Established in 1987, this prestigious award is presented at the end of each season to the nation's top college quarterback based on character, citizenship, scholastic achievement, leadership qualities, and athletic accomplishments. Candidates must be a college senior or fourth-year junior on schedule to graduate with their class. Past winners include Peyton Manning (Tennessee, 1997), Eli Manning (Ole Miss, 2003), Matt Ryan (Boston College, 2007) and Andrew Luck (Stanford, 2011).  The Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award will be presented at a ceremony on December 6, 2013 in Baltimore, Md.

The three-year captain in one of 33 candidates for the CFPA National Performer of the Year. He is one of two Ivy League players on the list, joing 2012 finalist Tyler Varga of Yale.

One of the most exciting and productive quarterbacks in the history of the Ivy League, Mathews enters his final season on East Hill on the cusp of history. Already Cornell's career passing leader, he is a two-time Bushnell Cup finalist for Ivy League Player of the Year, and became the first sophomore to ever win the award in 2011. Despite playing through numerous injuries that limited him in 2012, Mathews was one of 20 players on the Walter Payton Award Watch List and a preseason first-team FCS All-American by Beyond Sports College Network. He was a two-time conference Offensive Player of the Week in 2012 and led the Ivy League in passing attempts (405), completions (251) and yards (3,196). He also finished second in passing touchdowns (18), completion percentage (.620) and pass efficiency (137.5) for players with at least five starts despite missing a game. Mathews finished on the All-Ivy second team and was runner-up for the Bushnell Cup. He ranked second nationally in passing yardage (355.1), third in total offense (338.4), 21st in points responsible for (13.8) and 32nd in pass efficiency (137.5). He is again on the Walter Payton Award Watch List to begin the 2013 campaign and is a preseason first-team FCS All-American according to Phil Steele.

Mathews and his Big Red teammates open the 2013 season when they play host to Bucknell on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 3 p.m.
