LAKE PLACID, N.Y. – Just days after former Cornell women's track star Jamie Gruebel '06 was selected by the U.S. Bobsled & Skeleton Federation (USBSF) to represent the United States at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, it has been announced that former Big Red men's lacrosse player Chris Langton '12 will serve as one of two replacement athletes for the men's bobsled team.
Replacement athletes can substitute for competing athletes during training runs, and they are eligible to compete in the event of an injury or illness. Langton will travel and train with the team leading up to and during the Olympic Winter Games. If a replacement is needed, the selection committee will reevaluate the teams before making a nomination.
Langton, who joins his older brother Steve on the team, was a second-team All-Ivy selection following a senior season in which he ran on the Big Red's first offensive midfield and posted a career-high 18 goals during his senior season. One of the fastest and most athletic players in the Ivy League, he also handed out two assists and picked up 19 ground balls. Of his 18 goals, two were man-up tallies and two were game-winners, including the overtime goal in Cornell's 9-8 victory over Denver. Following the season, he was also selected to participate in the 2012 USILA North/South Senior Game.
An outstanding all-around athlete, Langton was a four-year letter winner in track and field at Northfield Mount Hermon School and set the state record and earned All-American honors in the shuttle hurdle relay in 2006. Langton was also a New England Champion and Class A State Champion in the 4x200-meter relay.
Langton becomes the sixth Cornell athlete selected to travel to Sochi, joining Gruebel, as well as a Cornell quartet of women's ice hockey players – Rebecca Johnston '12, Laura Fortino '13, Lauriane Rougeau '13 and senior Brianne Jenner – that have been selected to represent Team Canada.
