ITHACA, N.Y. – Cornell football had a pair of strong individual performances recognized when the Ivy League announced its weekly honors on Monday. Sophomore
Chris Fraser was named the conference's Special Teams Player of the Week and freshman
Nick Gesualdi captured the Ancient Eight's Rookie of the Week.
For Fraser, the 2013 Ivy League Rookie of the Year and first-team all-league punter, it was his first weekly honor as the conference's top special teams performer. He had another outstanding game in the Big Red's 51-13 loss to Yale. Fraser punted a career-high eight times and averaged 42.5 yards per kick. He pinned two inside the 20 and two went more than 50 yards, including a 61-yarder. He leads the Ivy League in punting average by more than a yard per attempt and ranks 18th nationally in punting average at 41.8 yards per boot.
Gesualdi became the second straight Cornell player to take home Rookie of the Week honors, joining classmate
Jake Jatis. Gesualdi had a game-high nine tackles, including eight solo stops, in just his second collegiate start in the Big Red's loss to Yale. He entered the contest with five career stops after making his first career start last weekend. For the season, he ranks first among all Ivy League freshmen in tackles with 14.
Fraser, Gesualdi and the rest of the Big Red return to action on Saturday, Oct. 11 at 1 p.m. when they face defending Ivy champion Harvard on Fox College Sports Network.
