Minnesota-Duluth Runs Away from Big Red in Four Goal Third

Box Score (PDF)

DULUTH, Minn. – Cornell women's hockey hit the road for the first time in nearly a month on Friday afternoon as it headed to the Upper Midwest for a non-conference matchup at No. 9/10 Minnesota-Duluth. While the game was tightly contested for 40 minutes, the Bulldogs blitzed the Big Red for four goals in the third period to run away with the 7-2 win. The loss drops the Cornell to 0-3-0 on the road to begin the season.

In what has become a regular occurrence for the Big Red this season, Emily Fulton collected a goal and an assist for her sixth multi-point effort in eight games this season.

Senior captain Brianne Jenner added a power-play goal in the first period for her fourth goal of the season and 82nd of her career. She now moves to just two goals shy of tying Amy Stanzin (1982-86) for sixth all-time.

Sophomore goaltender Paula Voorheis (L, 3-5-0) made 34 saves in the loss.

For the fourth consecutive game the Big Red (3-5-0, 3-2-0 ECAC Hockey) cracked the scoreboard first. Jenner drew a hooking call after attacking the offensive zone one-on-four and Cornell capitalized just after the penalty expired. Saulnier won a puck battle down low and wheeled it back to the slot to Fulton. Fulton sent a cross-ice pass to Jenner who one-timed a slapper to the short side past Minnesota-Duluth net-minder Kayla Black to stake the Big Red to the 1-0 lead at 8:39 of the first period.

The advantage on the scoreboard was short-lived as the Bulldogs (9-4-2, 5-4-1 WCHA) equalized just 1:52 later. Lara Stalder worked the puck up to Meghan Huertas who was streaking with speed through the neutral zone. She moved into the Cornell end on a two-on-one. Huertas labeled a perfect pass to Zoe Hickel who was charging toward the right post. The Bulldogs leading goal scorer snapped one past Voorheis to tie the score at 10:31 of the first period.

Sidney Morin pushed the Bulldogs ahead 2-1 just 2:09 into the second period. She streaked down the right wing and fired a shot on goal. Voorheis kicked out the save, but the rebound came right back to Morin at the near post. She snapped another quick shot and the puck deflected off Voorheis' pad and inside the near post for the Bulldogs first lead of the game.

The Bulldogs hot start to the second continued as the potted home their second goal of the period 3:31 later. Brigette Lacquette made a nice move at the blue-line to toe-drag the puck to maintain possession. She fired a slapper wide, but the rebound kicked off the boards. Michela Cava jumped on the rebound and would not be denied, powering home a shot past Voorheis to make it 3-1.

The Big Red answered back at 11:04 of the second period. With Lara Stalder and Kaitlin Doering off for off-setting roughing minors the two teams skated four-a-side. As the penalty times were running down, Fulton pounced on a turnover in the neutral zone went in on an uncontested breakaway on Black. She faked a shot and then fired a wrister through the five-hole to cut the deficit to 3-2.

Fulton nearly equalized the game, while the Big Red was shorthanded, late in the second period. After Voorheis made a couple strong stops, Cornell cleared the puck to the Bulldog end. Fulton stole the puck at the left wall and moved in on the backhand, with a UMD defender pursuing on her left. She ripped a backhand shot, but Black was able to steer it wide.

The Bulldogs jumped out early to start the third, extending the lead to 4-2 at 2:03 of the third period. The Bulldogs pressed the forecheck to begin the period and created a turnover behind the net. The puck worked free to the crease and Hickel was able to pound it home under the pad of Voorheis to reestablish the two-goal advantage.

The Bulldogs added on at 9:01 of the period. Again forcing a turnover in the Cornell zone, Katerina Mrazova moved the puck from the top of the right circle to the left faceoff dot to Jenna McParland. She quickly flipped it back to the far post to Ashleigh Brykaliuk who tapped it into a wide open cage to finish the beautiful tic-tac-toe play.

Chasing the game with a three-goal deficit, the Big Red had to take some risks to try and create on the offensive end. The Bulldogs were able to capitalize twice more on goals by Lacquette and Huertas.

Cornell will return to action tomorrow evening with the second game of the series. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:07 p.m. EST.
