ITHACA, N.Y. – Coming off a 26-save shutout of Brown on Saturday night, Cornell men's hockey freshman goalie
Hayden Stewart has been named the ECAC Hockey Men's Rookie of the Week. It's the first ECAC Hockey weekly honor awarded to the Big Red this season.
Making his first career start in the league play, Stewart made 10 of his 26 saves in the first period as the Big Red built a three-goal lead against the Bears. His rebound control didn't yield many second chances for Brown. Cornell now has at least one shutout in 20 consecutive seasons, spanning the entire active coaching career of
Mike Schafer. Stewart's shutout is also the first by a Big Red freshman since future All-American Ben Scrivens '10 made 22 saves to blank Union, 6-0, on Dec. 2, 2006. Like Stewart, it was Scrivens' first start in ECAC Hockey play.
Stewart becomes the first Cornell player to win a weekly ECAC Hockey award since
Andy Iles '14 was named the Goaltender of the Week on Feb. 25. The last time a Big Red player was named Rookie of the Week was three weeks prior to that, when forward
Jeff Kubiak had a goal and two assists in a road sweep of Yale and Brown.
The Big Red is tied for third in team defense, yielding just 1.62 goals per game through its first eight contests. Cornell will play next at The Frozen Apple at 8 p.m. Saturday against Penn State at Madison Square Garden in New York
