Perfect Afternoon For Wrestling In Shutout at Penn

2/1/2014 3:55:00 PM

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Cornell wrestling team walked into one of the most famed arenas in the country, Penn's Palestra, ready for an epic battle. They walked out like they owned the place. The Big Red won all 10 bouts, allowed just one takedown all afternoon and remained unbeaten in Ivy League dual competition with a 32-(-1) win over the Quakers on Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore Nahshon Garrett and senior Mike Nevinger each won their matches by major decisions and the Big Red never trailed in any match until Penn's heavyweight took a 1-0 second period lead over Jacob Aiken-Phillips before the junior pulled out a 3-1 decision. Cornell has now scored at least 30 points in six of their eight dual meets and 29 in another en route to its perfect 8-0 start.

With Cornell or Penn at least sharing every Ivy League title since 1987, the Big Red took a huge step toward making sure that string continued while staking a major claim to its unprecedented 12th consecutive Ancient Eight title. In the process, it won its 61st straight Ivy League dual meet and its 32nd consecutive EIWA match.

In the two feature matches between ranked wrestlers, Garrett and freshman Gabe Dean each grinded out important victories. Garrett earned one of only two bonus point victories on the day with his 10-2 victory over No. 17 Caleb Richardson at 125, while Dean picked up a 7-5 victory at 184 pounds against 14th-ranked Lorenzo Thomas.

At both 165 pounds with Dylan Palacio and at heavyweight with Aiken-Phillips, the Big Red secured the shutout with late takedowns for wins. Aiken-Phillips

Mark Grey at 133, Mike Nevinger at 141, Duke Pickett at 174 and Jace Bennett at 197 all had convincing wins by decision, while Brian Realbuto at 157 and Dylan Palacio at 165 each were able to take tight wins to complete the sweep.

The Quakers were docked a point during the 197-pound match due to a second bench warning to account for the odd final score.

Cornell will attempt to make it 4-0 in Ivy play when it meets Princeton at 6 p.m.
