Walters Becomes Third Cornellian To Win A Super Bowl Ring

ITHACA, N.Y. -- As the final moments ticked off the clock in Seattle's 43-8 win over Denver in Super Bowl XLVIII last night, you could forgive Bryan Walters if his mind drifted back to when he was a kid, running around the Seahawks' practice facility pretending to be the Steve Largent. It's hard to believe in his wildest dreams he would have helped his hometown team to its first Super Bowl title.

Walters will be sized for one of the world's most prestigious rings, joining a group of two other elite Cornellians and 14 other former Ivy League football players who have been on rosters that earned Super Bowl titles. The list of Cornellians is short. Derrick Harmon won his in Super Bowl XIX for the San Francisco 49ers, while offensive lineman Kevin Boothe '05 has won two with the New York Giants (Super Bowl XLII and XLVI).

In his first full season with the Seahawks, the 6-0, 190-pound wide receiver played in four contests with his first career start in Week 17 of the regular season. He saw action in the NFC championship game with nine snaps on offense during the 23-17 win over the San Francisco 49ers two weeks ago. Though he was inactive for the Super Bowl game, he was part of the 53-man roster and participated in all activities during the week, including all practices and media day.

Walters graduated with Ivy League records for career punt (972) and kick return (2,790) yards, and finished behind only Harvard's Clifton Dawson on the conference's all-purpose yardage list (5,795 yards). He graduated fourth on Cornell's career reception (144) and receiving yardage (2,032) charts as well. Despite all those accolades, he was just a second-team All-Ivy receiver and return specialist as a senior. Walters led the Ivy League and finished fifth nationally in all-purpose yards per game (171.6 ypg.), the second-best mark in a season at Cornell behind Marinaro's magical 1971 campaign that saw him finish as the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy.

Walters had previously spent two seasons with the San Diego Chargers and one with the Minnesota Vikings.
