Iles Named Ivy League Player of the Year, One of Three on All-Ivy First Team

3/7/2014 10:00:00 AM

ITHACA, N.Y. — Senior goaltender Andy Iles has been named the Ivy League Player of the Year for men's hockey, as announced by the league Friday morning. Iles is also joined on the All-Ivy League First Team by junior forward Brian Ferlin and junior defenseman Joakim Ryan. Junior forward John McCarron also garnered honorable mention from the 2014 Ivy League champions.

Iles has rewritten the record books in his time at Cornell, now standing as the program's all-time leader in career saves with 2,900. He was also named to the All-Ivy first team in 2012, which is also the last time the Big Red won the league crown, and earned honorable mention as a freshman in 2011. Iles was outstanding in Ivy League play this year, posting a 8-1-1 record. His 1.37 goals against average led the league and his .950 save percentage ranks second in the circuit. He is Cornell's first Ivy League Player of the Year since goaltender David McKee in 2005.

One of the top offensive defensemen in the country, Ryan was one of just two unanimous selections to the first team (Yale forward Jesse Root is the other). Ryan had six assists in 10 Ivy League games, which ranked him tied for second in the league in defenseman scoring. It's his second career All-Ivy honor after he was placed on the second team in 2013.

Ferlin led the Big Red in scoring in Ivy games, posting four goals and four assists for eight points. Two of those goals were game-winners, including a dramatic overtime goal on a breakaway Jan. 31 at Yale. He is no stranger to Ivy League honors, having been named the Rookie of the Year and a member of the All-Ivy Second Team in 2012.

McCarron, the Big Red's captain, had three goals and four assists for seven points in 10 Ivy games. Two of his goals came against Princeton, then he got Cornell on the board last Saturday before collecting the primary assist on the overtime winner against Harvard.

The last time the Big Red had three representatives on the All-Ivy First Team was 2010, when forwards Blake Gallagher and Colin Greening and goalie Ben Scrivens were all given the nod. Iles is the sixth Ivy League Player of the Year under the tutelage of head coach Mike Schafer.
