WORCESTER, Mass. – The No. 1 Cornell lightweight men's rowing team proved its rank this afternoon by winning the varsity eight race to take home both the Ivy Cup and the Joseph Wright Trophy at the 2014 EARC Sprints, held on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass.  With its top three finishes in the varsity eight, second varsity eight and freshmen eight, the Big Red also took home the Jope Cup.
 
The Jope Cup is awarded to the lightweight team that scores the highest total points in the varsity, second varsity and freshmen eight races at Sprints. The Big Red has now won the cup five times, with the last victory coming in 2008.
 
With its victory in the varsity eight, Cornell won its first Ivy League championship since 2008 for its ninth title in program history.
 
Cornell has earned 10 Wright Trophies, with the last coming in 2008. The Big Red's first Wright Trophy, in 1949, was awarded prior to the formation of the Ivy League.
 
It was a solid day all around for the lightweights as the third varsity eight and the second freshmen eight also placed in the top three of the Grand Finals, as all five Big Red boats earned medals.
