Big Red Trio Selected For NCAA Fencing Championships

INDIANAPOLIS – Fresh off her first place finish in epee at the 2015 NCAA Northeast Regional, Cornell fencer Victoria Wines has earned a spot in the field of 144 competitors who will participate in the 2015 National Collegiate Men's and Women's Fencing Championships.  Joining Wines will be juniors Angelica Gangemi and Ediona Sera. The Ohio State University will host the championships March 21-23 at French Fieldhouse in Columbus, Ohio.

Wines will make her second trip to the NCAA Championship. As a freshman, she  placed 14th overall at the NCAAs, picking up 10 victories, including wins over a pair of top 10 finishers in Notre Dame's Nicole Ameli (eighth place) and Harvard's Emma Vaggo (ninth place), and finishing with a touch-differential of -6 (87-93).

Gangemi will participate in her third consecutive NCAA Championship. A year ago, she finished in 16th place, earning 10 victories overall, including a top 10 win over St. John's Irene Spezzamonte (10th), while posting a touch-differential of -9 (77-86). As a freshman, she placed 14th at the NCAA championship, earning 11 victories, including upset wins over Princeton's Ambika Singh (ninth place) and Yale's Lauren Miller (13th place), while posting a touch-differential of -4 (75-79).

Sera will make her NCAA Championship debut this season.

The National Collegiate Men's and Women's Fencing Championships include individual events in each of the six weapons (men's épée, men's foil, men's sabre, women's épée, women's foil, women's sabre).
Fencers will compete in a round-robin format of five-touch bouts. After the round-robin, the top-four finishers in each weapon will fence in semifinal 15-touch bouts, with the winners fencing to determine first and second places, and the non-advancing fencers being awarded a tie for third place.

An institution's place finish in the championships will be based on points earned by each individual. A team will be awarded one point for each victory by its student-athletes for the duration of the championships.
