Trudy Vande Berg has been named The Wendy Schaenen '79 Head Coach Of Volleyball at Cornell it was announced today by
Andy Noel, the Meaken*Smith Director of Athletics and Physical Education. Vande Berg has served as an assistant coach for the Big Red for the past three seasons and most recently has served as the program's interim head coach.
In her three seasons as an assistant, the Big Red improved its win total overall and in league play, and it defeated 19-win Pittsburgh in its own tournament in 2013 and perennial NCAA qualifier Albany in 2014.
Natasha Rowland '15 was named Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year in 2014, one of six All-Ivy League selections during Vande Berg's three seasons on East Hill.
The Big Red led the Ivy League in blocks in 2013, while the 2012 team went 9-16 overall and 5-9 in league play, its best finishes since the 2008 campaign. Cornell finished strong, winning three of its final four and snapping a losing streak of nearly six year to Princeton.
Prior to her time at Cornell, Vande Berg spent time as an assistant coach at North Florida, Duke and Iowa State and as a volunteer assistant at Wisconsin. She also served as head coach of the Team Iowa Ice professional club in the Premier Volleyball League, where she guided the team to the championship in her second year at the helm. Ice is the only team to have medaled in each of the three years of the league's existence.
As assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Iowa State from 2009-12, Vande Berg played an instrumental role in recruiting the talent that earned the Cyclones a spot in the 2011 NCAA Elite Eight and three NCAA appearances. ISU finished second in the powerful Big XII twice in three seasons and posted a cumulative record of 72-20.
Vande Berg previously spent four seasons as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for former Big Red head coach Jolene Nagel at Duke (2005-09). During her time with the Blue Devils, the team made four NCAA tournament appearances and won the ACC championship twice. She recruited and/or trained 11 All-ACC players and two ACC Players of the Year.
Prior to her stint at Duke, Vande Berg served as a volunteer assistant at Wisconsin (2004-05) after spending two seasons as the first assistant at North Florida (2002-03). While working with the Ospreys, she helped produce an All-American and assisted in all aspects of the nationally-ranked Division II program.
Vande Berg has also spent time on the club circuit, working with USAVB High Performance, Team Florida High Performance and Sky High-Milwaukee, as well as stints with the Milwaukee Chapter of Starlings, a volleyball club for underprivileged student-athletes.
A three-time all-league player at Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Vande Berg earned her degree in health care administration in 1999 before embarking on her coaching career. She earned first-team All-MCC League honors as a senior and a second team selection her two prior seasons. She set school records for blocks in a match and a career and remains in the top 10 career lists in school history in blocks, kills and attack percentage.
