Geiger Cup

Men's Rowing - Lightweight

No. 1 Lightweight Rowing Perfect Vs. No. 2 Columbia & No. 5 MIT

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – After sweeping Yale in its last outing, the No. 1 Cornell men's lightweight rowing team continued its impressive streak this morning, sweeping No. 2 Columbia and No. 5 MIT in a battle for the Geiger Cup on the Charles River.

The Big Red earned the Geiger Cup for the second year in a row, and the 10th time in the last 13 seasons, when it crossed the finish of the varsity eight in a time of 6:18, a full three seconds ahead of the Lions. Cornell posted even larger results in the second varsity and third varsity eights, besting Columbia by seven and eight seconds, respectively. Cornell also won the varsity four.

"We were able to test our speed against a much anticipated field of No. 2 Columbia and No.5 MIT on the Charles River Basin in a challenging headwind," said Chris Kerber, the Henry E. Bartels '48 Head Coach of Men's Lightweight Crew. "We are excited to return solid results from the 60th running of the Geiger Cup.  Our internal focus on things we can control is setting us up for success, both to finish out our regular season and launch our team into the championship season in May."

With a record of 6-0 in head-to-head competition, Cornell will seek its second consecutive undefeated season when it returns to Ithaca for its final race of the cup season vs. No. 9 Dartmouth on Saturday, May 2 for the Baggaley Bowl.
