Men's Rowing - Lightweight

No. 1 Lightweights Seek Perfection Vs. No. 9 Dartmouth

ITHACA, N.Y. – The No. 1 Cornell men's lightweight rowing team will take on No. 9 Dartmouth in a battle for the Baggaley Bowl on Saturday, May 2 on the Cayuga Lake Inlet. Over the past two weekends, the Big Red has swept No. 6 Yale, No. 2 Columbia and No. 5 MIT to improve to 6-0 in head-to-head competition and with a victory over the Big Green, Cornell will post consecutive undefeated seasons for the first time in nearly 50 years.

Cornell, which posted a 6-0 record a year ago, last registered consecutive undefeated seasons when it was a perfect 28-0 over a five-year span from 1964 to 1968.

Racing will begin on Saturday at 8:45 a.m., with the race for the Baggaley Bowl starting at 9:15 a.m.

THE BAGGALEY BOWL: The Baggaley Cup was placed in competition in 1964 in honor of Bruce Baggaley, a Dartmouth lightweight crew coach and oarsman, by his 1964 lightweight crew, and is awarded to the winner of the varsity eight race between Cornell and Dartmouth.

THE SERIES HISTORY: Through 2014, Cornell has won the Baggaley Cup 30 times and Dartmouth has won it 21 times. The Big Green had a two-year winning streak snapped in 2012, as the Big Red has now won seven of the last 11 and three in a row.

LAST TIME AT THE BAGGALEY BOWL: The No. 1 Big Red capped its first undefeated season since the 1992 team went 8-0 by sweeping No. 9 Dartmouth to earn its third consecutive Baggaley Bowl May 3, 2014 on the Connecticut River. Cornell set the tone in the first race of the day, winning the Baggaley Bowl by nearly 11 seconds over Dartmouth. The Big Red then swept the top two spots in the second varsity eight race, with the Big Red freshmen eight crossing the line more than three seconds ahead of their teammates in the second varsity eight, and more than seven seconds ahead of the Big Green's second varsity eight. The final race of the day proved to be the most dominating win by Cornell with the third varsity eight winning by more than 24 seconds.

UP NEXT: The Big Red will have two weeks off to prepare for Eastern Sprints, held Sunday, May 17 on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass.
