ITHACA, N.Y. — Coming off the program's best season in 20 years, Women's Soccer head coach
Patrick Farmer has announced that seven freshmen will join the squad for the 2016 season. The group will join a team which loses just four players to graduation after posting a 9-4-4 record in 2015.
The seven newcomers arrive from a variety of regions, spanning from the Mid-Altlantic to the Big Red's home turf in Upstate New York and all the way to Las Vegas. The Big Red's 2016 schedule is expected to be released this summer.
Incoming Player BiographiesAbby AdamsDefense — 5-foot-9 — Wyckoff, N.J. (Ramapo HS / NJ Stallions)With her nationally ranked club team, the NJ Stallions, Adams has served as a captain for four years and will compete in the national championships in July in Frisco, Texas. Adams captained her high school team to the New Jersey state championship in 2015, anchoring a defense which posted 20 shutouts throughout the season. She was a regional All-American after her senior season, was twice named to her group's first-team all-state team, twice named to the all-North New Jersey first team and a three-time all-county selection.
"Abby is one of the top defenders in New Jersey, again being named to the all-state team after helping her team win the state championship," Farmer said. "She brings excellent speed, physical presence and intensity to the back line. Abby will major in environmental engineering."
Sophie AxenrothDefender — 5-foot-5 — Doylestown, Pa. (Germantown Academy / FC Bucks)Axenroth captained her Germantown Academy team to the Pennsylvania Independent Schools championship in 2015. She was named the team's most valuable player, earned a spot on the All Inter-Ac first team and The Intelligencer Honors second team. Axenroth competed on the club level with FC Bucks, winning the conference in 2014.
"Sophie is a flank defender who brings speed, athleticism and attacking ability to the defending group," Farmer said. "She is capable of playing on both sides of the field and gets forward into the attack with and without the ball. She will be exploring economics. Her father is a Cornell graduate who played on the freshman football team."
Karli BerryMidfielder/Forward — 5-foot-6 — Las Vegas, Nev. (Bishop Gorman HS / Heat FC)Berry competed exclusively on the club level with Heat FC, where she was a TopDrawer Soccer regionally ranked recruit for the Rocky Mountain/Southwest division. She was a captain for five years and was invited to participate in the ECNL's selective Player Development Program in 2015.
"Karli is a dynamic midfield attacker who likes to pentrate with and without the ball," Farmer said. "She brings a good skill set, a good soccer brain and a tremendous work rate. Both of her parents are Cornell graduates. Karli has an interest in Cornell's Near Eastern studies department, and both of her parents are Cornell graduates."
Juliana ComerMidfielder/Forward — 5-foot-3 — Potomac, Md. (Winston Churchill HS / Maryland United FC)Comer was a NSCAA All-American and the Washington Post All-Met Player of the Year in 2015. She was a two-time all-state first team selection and a 2015 NSCAA All-Region Team South honoree. At the club level, she helped lead Maryland United Coyotes to five consecutive state cups, the 2012 USYS national championship, and the 2013 and 2016 USYS National League championships.
"Juliana is a very skilled midfielder and forward with excellent possessive abilities," Farmer said. "She is a very good passer with vision of the entire field and will play primarily in the center of the field at Cornell in a number of roles. Juliana is a first-team all-state player in Maryland and won a national championship with her club team. She will major in biological engineering."
Kaili GregoryDefender/Midfielder — 5-foot-10 — Washington, D.C. (Woodrow Wilson HS / Bethesda SC)Gregory was named the Gatorade D.C. Player of the Year and DCSAA Player of the Year after she helped Wilson win the program's first state championship in 2015. She served as a co-captain on the team, was named to the Washington Post's All-Met secone team. On the club level, Gregory was a four-time co-captain and helped Bethesda SC to the ECNL national playoffs in 2014.
"Kaili is a tall central defender/central midfielder who is excellent in the air and also brings a strong left-footed serving presence to the team from both the run of play and set pieces," Farmer said. "Kaili has an interest in Environmental Sciences and Sustainability, and her mother is a Cornell graduate who played on the volleyball team."
Chrissy MayerGoalkeeper — 5-foot-9 — East Windsor, N.J. (Notre Dame HS / Jen Elite Training (EDP))Mayer backstopped Notre Dame to division, county and regional championships her senior season. She also competed with Jen Elite Training and the Eastern Development Program. Mayer also earned three letters as an outfielder with Notre Dame's softball team.
"Chrissy is a goalkeeper who comes from one of the strong New Jersey high school and academy programs," Farmer said. "She possesses good ability on crosses and high balls, and she has good distribution qualities to start attacks. She will major in engineering in the same college from which her mother graduated."
Kennedy YearbyForward — 5-foot-7 — Syracuse, N.Y. (Bishop Grimes HS / Syracuse Development Academy)Yearby racked up 130 career goals in her four season at Bishop Grimes, where she was twice among the section's top scorers, a three-time Syracuse Post Standard All-CNY team member and two-time league player of the year. Yearby was named to the all-state first team in 2014 and was named her team's offensive MVP three times. On the club level, Yearby competed with Syracuse Development Academy, which won the New York West state championship in 2014 and 2015, and she was ranked among the top 10 recruits in the region by TopDrawer Soccer.
"Kennedy is a strong striker and central defender who will play up front at Cornell. She is a great athlete with size and speed, and she is the career high-scorer at Bishop Grimes," Farmer said. "Kennedy has also been a member of multiple NYS West and East Region Olympic Development Program teams. At Cornell, she will study Industrial and Labor Relations."
