STORRS, Conn. -- The Cornell women's polo team won its 15th national title and second straight after topping Texas A&M 13-11 in Saturday afternoon's championship game. Anna Winslow and Elena Wicker took home All-Star honors.
The appearance was Cornell's 32nd in the national championship match in 41 years. Captain Winslow led Wicker and Emma Eldredge into the match. The Big Red took the early lead 3-1 and closed the first ahead 4-2. The Aggies were rattled but responded in the second, after trading goals with the top seed and ran off four unanswered goals to take a 7-5 lead into the half. The third saw the teams battle back and forth with each scoring three times and the Aggies ending the chukker still up by two at 10-8. In the fourth, Cornell answered the bell by scoring the first five goals of the chukker to take a 13-10 with about 1:30 to play. The Aggies scored with 40 seconds left to make what would be the final score of 13-11, as Cornell then gained control of the ball and ran the final 25 seconds of the clock off to win a 15th national championship.
Winslow and Wicker each tallied six goals and Emma Eldredge had one. Cornell's Juanita took home Best Pony and Cornell also won Best String on the Women's side.
